hi

We are going to meet up with family this weekend its been awhile since we've done this. There will be alot of drinking, swearing and what have you on the day. My husband and I are making major changes to what we want our 2 boys and ourselves to be exposed to and arent sure how to go about this situation. I know it would be common sense to just get up and leave its just that its abit different with family. How do you cope in this situation when you dont like what your seeing and hearing. We love our family dearly but not sure how to be around them without feeling even more alienated.

I go through the same thing when we go to my aunt's house her husband does not watch his tongue and the boys on that side of the family should have been born with a keg in their mouths. My uncle used to pay my kids off to be still and qiute when we all went out. I wish I would have told him everytime he swore he owed us 5 bucks but i thought the wholt situation was bad at the end of the time I would have the kids try to give him the $$ back but he refused. One good thing when the guys would get drunk they never got violent.

But if kids see the ill affects they most of the time break or try to break the chain. I did. Both grandfathers alcholics and a few uncles as well.

One uncle 15 yrs sober.

My mom wouldn't let us around relatives who were drinking, cussing, or using or selling drugs. If they wanted to see us or wanted us to visit they'd have to leave the alcohol and drugs alone.... they wouldn't do that so, we only saw each other at church or out in stores.

Notice I said they went to church - christian on Sunday and partied the rest of the week like rock stars!

About the only time I see family who chooses those things is at funerals. I made a decision when my kids were small to not involve them with that kind of lifestyle and I have not regretted my decision.
