Wow, excellent, thoughtful post. I struggle with these questions myself at times. I like how you included about mental giftedness too. Even with working fairly hard, I ALWAYS struggled in school. I sometimes wondered if God loved me, why didn't he make me one of those honor society, understands things easily, 4.0, gold cord around the neck at graduation type students? But he didn't. And I can't necessarily know why.
Why does my youngest sister have to have such severe disabilities that cause her to be at a 4 month level at age 28? We don't know why, but God does.
Look at THIS webpage. Why is the one sister so incredibly attractive, while the other sister has to deal with such severe deformities? We don't know why, but God does.
Also, not to sound callous or anything, but in some sense to answer your question from a biological standpoint, one of the reasons you see more deformities today is that we have better medical care, and many kinds of "defective" people survive today that would not have survived in the past. Also, sadly to say, long ago there was some infanticide regarding deformed babies, and now it's at times done through abortion.
To me, one of the saddest verses in Scripture is this: Then the Lord spoke to Moses saying, "No man of your offspring throughout their generations who has a defect shall approach to offer the food of God. For no one who has a defect shall approach: a blind man, or a lame man, or he has a disfigured face, or any deformed limb, or a man who has a broken foot or a broken hand, or a hunchback or a dwarf, or one who has a defect in his eye, or exzema or scabs or crushed testicles. No man among the descendants of Aaron the priest who has a defect is to come near to the Lord's offerings by fire; since he has a defect, he shall not come near to offer the food of his God. Duet.21:16-21 NAS
I never understood that verse, as it seems like God is punishing those people for the way he made them. However, in the New Testament, it is totally different, and it seems like Christ cares for these kind of people the most. Remember when the disciples asked Christ whether it was the blind man or his parents who had sinned that he was born blind, and Jesus said it was neither, but that the glory of God might be shone.
If you take the two verses, as hard to swallow as the first verse may seem, I think God was showing that before Christ, to be in his presence there had to be perfection, as well as animal sacrifice, but with Christ we have his blood covering us, and we have our perfection in him, and we know longer need the blood of animals either.
It can seem hard to see people suffer, but on the other hand what is most important? Our characters! And sometimes people that suffer in the way you listed above, have their characters refined in ways many normal people can never imagine. They can also weed out the phonies much sooner than the average joe.
I also think God created some people to suffer in order for others to have compassion.
Have you ever seen the movie "A Wrinkle in Time?" In one segment they show a planet where everyone is the same. They all live in the exact same style of house, they all wear the exact same style of clothes, all the kids are out bouncing basketballs at the same time, to the exact same rythym, all the kids are called in at the exact time. It's eerie. I don't even remember the entire plot of the movie, but that part always stuck with me as to why people are different.
In my opinion one of the most deformed things I've ever seen is when I see beautiful women be total snobs. When I see a woman who is physically beautiful, but also has a sweet expression, and doesn't seem all pridefully aware of her own good looks, now THAT'S attractive.
The countenance can do a lot.
