Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own......

If our bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit - how should we treat our bodies? Do you treat your body according to Scripture requirements?

My body is not doing too well,, Thank God the Holy Spirit doesn't move out cause the building is condemned.

Define the requirements.

Liveloved -> RE: How do you treat yours? (6/13/2008 4:40:01 PM)

I very much believe in caring for His/my temple. My husband is gluten intolerant so that has made us even more careful. But I was always very conscious of what we put in our bodies. Eating healthfully is very important to me. Also exercise on a regular basis is important. Mind stimulation is another aspect that is important. Can't think of others right now so will read what others say.

mvic -> RE: How do you treat yours? (6/13/2008 5:17:52 PM)

Oh Little_1 What a difficult question.

If we're to treat our bodies according to Scripture requirements then we should not smoke, drink, take drugs, over-eat, under-eat, take part in dangerous sports, have tatoos, pins and rings sticking out of our bodies ... etc ... etc ... Need I go on?

Your difficult questions are grinding me down. They are not doing my brain any good. And as my brain is a part of my body ...

I think I need a rest!

jbird56 -> RE: How do you treat yours? (6/13/2008 5:25:33 PM)

I do believe our bodies are temples. I also believe that they are simply tents that we exist in until we return to the Lord. However, since we belong to Him, I will take care of this temple/tent that He has given me. Due to my illnesses, I often feel as if my body is being slammed around. But I do not give in or give up. I will be here until He wants me to return. The doctors told me I had 3 - 5 years to live. That was 7+ years ago. It is not up to the doctors; it is up to the Lord. So, even though I suffer a lot physically, I will continue to treat my body as best I can and "wait for the Lord."

Treat it like you will get to take it to heaven with you not like your body is your heaven.

This may be too much info but I check what goes in and what goes out. I make a great effort to lift and put down my arms and feet repetively so that I am sweating for at least an hour several times a week.

Most of all, the Holy Spirit also lives in this shell and I don't want Him to leave because I'm trying to squeeze the devil in there too. There is not enough room for both.

Giulia -> RE: How do you treat yours? (6/13/2008 7:34:14 PM)

I eat good food and do a lot of exercise and drink plenty of water. I don't use illicit drugs anymore and don't do sex. I do get in the ring and punch and get punched, kicked as well sometimes. I don't feel that though so it's not like I am allowing myself to get hurt, nor do I intentionally hurt others, just if they get in the way[:D]. Actually I pull my punches and just keep busy rather than hit hard. I have a whole lot of energy and I find boxing is a good way to excercise that. Besides I hate to be a useless and pitiful woman who needs a man to protect her.

Sometimes things I think about are my own thoughts and not directed by the Lord.

Little_1 -> RE: How do you treat yours? (6/14/2008 3:07:30 AM)

I have done a quick study into tatoos (based on Lev 28:19 only) and was surprised by what I found - see post # 13.

As MrFribbles has rightly mentioned in post #12 - there is a whole section re: tatoos in the Ethics & Morality section of Crosswalk and any further info re: tatoos can be found and discussed there.

MrFribbles -> RE: How do you treat yours? (6/14/2008 3:09:29 AM)

Not that this subject isn't important, but the Bible college student in me has to point out that the verse this thread is based on is being used out of context. It's addressing uniting our bodies with prostitutes, not having a physically fit lifestyle.

As to the question the OP asks...
All things in moderation. Fitness is important, yes, but it can become an idol. If we spend more time and energy worrying about and working on our health than we do serving and glorifying God, then something is wrong.

quote:

it has made me wonder if anyone would continue to be tatoo'd after coming to faith in Christ in light of what God's Word says?

There's a whole topic about that in the Morality and Ethics folder. You might find it interesting!

Since my first post i.e. # 11 - I have looked at Lev 19:28 in context and was suprised in what I discovered:

Sorry MrFribbles but this particular verse (i.e. Lev 19:28) has nothing to do with prostitues. It is more likely to do with 'grieving' the dead which may surprise some. Part of the chapter has to do with sleeping with prostitutes but not this particular verse.

In it's context it says not to cut or paint yourselves when grieving the dead so really even in this context - actual modern day tatoos seem to have nothing to do with Lev 19:28 (unless a tatoo is in memory of someone who died perhaps).

I'm sorry, you misunderstand - Before I quoted you, I was referring to this particular thread. The verse I meant was being taken out of context was the 1 Corinthians 6 verse. Sorry for the confusion, I will try to be more clear in the future!

That's okay - I should have read it better also.

Being honest - I'm not sure where I stand re: tatoos (would need to study it more) but I was surprised that Lev 19:28 seems to be generally taken totally out of context by many re: tatoos.

Regarding MrFribbles info on fitness - yes so true! Fitness is important but it can become an idol if we are not careful.

God judges the heart....not how many situps we can do.

One hr or two a aday is not too much for fitness. It is great for general health and well being. I have also found it helps the mind wouk better. I have had to struggle with illnesses and aches and it has given me great benefits. I am glorifying God as through my work on it He is also able to work better through the regeneration of my cells.

That's right, so someone who does a lot of situps does not necessarily have an untrue heart.

pbaribeault -> RE: How do you treat yours? (6/14/2008 5:35:57 PM)

So, reading in 1 Corinthians chapter 6, I see that in verse 9 Paul begins the topic which ends with the verse quoted at the top of the thread (v.19).

He is talking about using our bodies for wickedness, which people at the time were trying to claim didn't matter since the 'soul' was 'saved'. (There was a whole school of thought that emphasized just giving in to whatever the body craves, so that it would stop distracting us from our spiritual life.)

The line items that are referenced are
- sexual immorality
- idolatry
- adultery
- prostitution
- homosexual offences
- theft
- greed
- drunkenness
- slander
- swindling

He refutes the claim (presumably being made by these people) that because they are forgiven by grace/faith that all immorality is now 'permitted'. And in a sense it is, since it can and is forgiven under the blood of Jesus every day -- but that is not to say that believers have a free hand to be that sort of person with impunity.

Why not?

Because we are now indwelt. We are holy ground. We are a temple. If our bodies are not mastered by the one we call "Lord" then there is a terrible disconnect somewhere in our faith life.

Using the specific idea of secular immorality (which is often related to 'worship' in pagan temples) Paul drives this point home by pointing out surprisingly graphically the absolute wrongness of somebody in whom Christ dwells blithely taking Him along to a profane sexual union and involving Him in that carnal interaction.

So, I answered "Yes" -- meaning for the most part. I certainly refrain from sexual immorality (particularly I have no trouble with pagan temple prostitutes). However, I do at time struggle with engaging my body in other listed wickedness such as greed (which I believe to be the besetting sin of all affluent cultures).

There are far better Scriptures for the discussion of the care and condition of our bodies as far as health, fitness and appearance.

Or a true one.

What are the holy excersizes...ya know....the ones Jesus did? As far as I remember it was...walking. Maybe a few nails hammered. A little excitement in the Temple.

Amen to being healthy and respecting the Temple. Praise God! ( As I sit here eating pizza ) However, we can idolize our bodies as well.

Whew! [sm=icon_smile_faint.gif] Thank God!!!!

To answer the question... my husband has me taking a ton of vitamins every day [:'(] (not sure what they all are... good thing I trust him! [:)]) I need to exercize... I'd like to be able to add a "more" to the end of that... guess I should get started some day! [8|]

We eat very good... probably too good. I love too much that ol country cookin'. Chicken fried steak... fried potatoes.... fried chicken... apple pan dowdy... bisquits and gravy (oh, I make a mean bisquits and gravy!![;)]) But we eat good things too... salads... fruit... veggies... and we make our own juice everyday.

Most importantly.... my temple has the indwelling of the Holy Spirit... and I think He likes ice cream!

I have heard the thing about tattoos and piercings but is that defiling the temple? If the tattoos or piercing themselves are not offensive what is wrong with them? This is being asked by a believer with pierced ears and a tattoo. I did consider others views before getting the tat but after prayer really found nothing wrong with it.
