New Haven Records released 'Southern Gospel Greats of the 80's' (best sg project I own. LOVE IT!!!), 'Southern Gospel Greats of the 90's', 'Southern Gospel Greats of the Century, Volume 1', and 'Southern Gospel Greats of the Century, Volume 2'.
Assuming that the tradition continues, in 2 years a compilation of Southern Gospel's best for this decade will be released. What songs released from 2000 till' now would be of the caliber to be on such a project?
We can't exactly make an assessment about this based on chart sucess, most #1's nowadays hold that positision for only 1 or 2 months. Also, keep in mind that "We Shall See Jesus" was on 2 of the above mentioned compilations, but the song never made it into the top 40. Some songs that are on the 2 Greats of the Century-discs were made popular before the Singing News chart was founded, eg, the Statesmen's cut of "Oh What A Savoiur".
Let's think hard about this....not nominating songs just because you orI like them will be hard. Try to think of 'mega songs', worthy of the title "greats of the decade".

I think this is a great idea, Quaid. I'll start making my list and will post it later!

Looking beyond chart success (and singles to radio). I attend a lot of concerts so I will list songs that seem to have made an impact with the concert audience. Here are a few from this decade to get started.

"Calvary Answers For Me" - Perrys
"Forever Changed" - Kingdom Heirs
"Four Days Late" - Karen Peck & New River
"He Is" - Triumphant Quartet
"He Saw It All" - Booth Brothers
"His Life For Mine" - Talley Trio
"I Can Pray" - Dove Brothers Quartet
"I Have Not Forgotten" - Inspirations
"Jerusalem" - Hoppers
"Long As I Got King Jesus" - Brian Free & Assurance
"New Day Dawning" - Whisnants
"Out Of My Darkness" - Legacy Five

Good picks, Seaton.
An example of putting personal bias aside, I was also thinking of mentioning "Long As I Got King Jesus" I for one can't stand at the song. Don't get me wrong, great lyrics, but I strongly dislike both
groups' arrangements.
But anyway, despite the fact that I don't like it, you have to look at the facts:
2 groups both recorded it, singled, and had a good deal of radio play with it. (Southern Harmony did it a couple years before Assurance)
BF&A is still staging it (That's what I've heard, but I've never seen them ) 3 years or so after it came out.
It was a hit off of a project that was a turning point for BF&A.

"Truth Is Marching On" may well be worth considering: recorded by 3 groups withing the same time frame.

I'd be very suprised if something from Legacy 5 didn't make it on a project like we're talking about. "He Forgets" and "I Found Grace" were very popular when "London" was released. Legacy 5 had 3 or 4 sucessfull radio singles off of that project, 4 off of "Monuments".
But of all Legacy 5 songs, I'd wager that "I Stand Redeemed" would stand the greatest chance.

"Get Away Jordan" has constantly been preformed by the Dove Brothers for the last 9 years since the group's inception. Now Signature Sound is staging it also.

"Four Days Late" is still very popular, being routinley performed by both Karen Peck & New River and many local singers. It's like "Midnight Cry", people simply won't stop singing it.

How about "My Name Is Lazarus." It's hard to go anywhere that people don't know that song!

True, but it isn't from this decade.

Unfortunately, I go lots of places where people have never so much as heard of Greater Vision, and have about as much an idea what Southern Gospel means as they do about soteriology.

Everybody needs some Greater Vision music to listen to while they study Christian soteriology.
-----
It's funny that when you type soteriology in here, the spell check says it isn't a word.

As unreal as it seems, I haven't had much opportunity to listen to Southern Gospel radio for the last few years. I'm fortunate to have found WFGW.org recently, and am truly enjoying that. I have, however, been able to watch / attend Gaither concerts. Because of that, most of my list would come from either the Gaithers, or those groups who are singing at Homecoming concerts.

Picture of Grace -- GVB
Sinner Saved by Grace -- GVB
I Love The Cross -- Talley Trio
Mary, Did You Know -- GVB

I believe I could come up with some more given the opportunity to think about it some more. I know Jeff and Sherri Easter as well as the Isaacs have released some really good stuff this decade, too.

You're right. I should rephrase.

It's hard to go anywhere that Southern Gospel fans don't know that song!

Looks like I'm not the only one to suggest songs that were not released this decade!

Yeah, that's true, unless they are a Gaither - only homecoming fan. then it's a tossup. But if they follow SG outside of Gaither, then chances are they've heard it.

I've got the Gaither Homecoming DVD (don't recall the name) when GV sang "My Name is Lazarus." I love that after the song was finished, George Younce patted Gerald on the cheek and then gave him a big hug! Very sweet!

I can even top that ---- there was a couple I sat with on the plane home from Hawaii and they kept calling them "New Vision." They were on the trip just because they wanted a Christian cruise!! And they even attended the concerts and hadn't learned the name of the group!

My Name Is Lazarus was a hit for GV in the late 90's.

This is just one of several reasons why I insist that it's the FANS of Southern Gospel who make this genre so different from other forms of Christian music. I have heard SG fans routinely slaughter the names of the artists they profess to love the most. You don't get that anywhere else.

No, it's from the 1990s. The song was introduced by Michael English on his self-titled CD (1992, I think), and then everybody covered it.
