ORIGINAL: MamaPyratekk I love those stickers! Why? Because they (the PLU #) can tell you a bit about what you're buying... "The codes are based on four-digit numbers for conventional produce, to which an extra digit is added to indicate organic or GM status. If the number is five digits beginning with a 9, then the item is organic. If the item is five digits beginning in 8, then it is a genetically modified crop. For example, the PLU code for bananas is 4011. If the PLU sticker on the banana bunch reads 94011, then they are organic bananas. If the PLU sticker reads 84011, then the bananas are a genetically modified variety." (source: http://www.fourwinds10.com/siterun_data/health/food/news.php?q=1211507091 ) That's really funny... I thought it was only weird people like me who knew about plu codes ~ I was a produce manager. quote:
Who puts those stickers on each piece of produce, anyway? Is it the store personnel or the growers? Whoever it is, they either have to pay someone to stand there and stick on each and every sticker or purchase additional machinery to do it...either way, it obviously contributes to the high price of produce. I think you'll find it's a machine. Frustrating as they may be, it's worth having them so that you can check your receipt afterwards. I was charged for cherries once, when I bought grapes ~ huge price difference. I knew the cashier quite well and went back to the store and told her and she called the supervisor (who I used to work with) to sort it out. I'd made it slightly more difficult to sort because I'd eaten about half the 'cherries' as I was looking at my receipt![:D]
