Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some [is]; but exhorting [one another]: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. Hebrews 10:25

I always thought this word fellowship ment the gathering together of believers but at a Sunday night church service the pastor said this was
wrong and that it really ment going soul winning and the telling of
unbelievers about salvation.

Which one is the correct meaning?

κοινωνια noun - dative singular feminine
koinonia koy-nohn-ee'-ah: partnership, i.e. (literally) participation, or (social) intercourse, or (pecuniary) benefaction -- (to) communicate(-ation), communion, (contri-)distribution, fellowship.

A powerful example of what koinonia should look like can be found in a study of the phrase “one another” in the Bible. Scripture commands us to be devoted to one another (Romans 12:10), honor one another (Romans 12:10), live in harmony with one another (Romans 12:16; 1 Peter 3:8), accept one another (Romans 15:7), serve one another in love (Galatians 5:13), be kind and compassionate to one another (Ephesians 4:32), admonish one another (Colossians 3:16), encourage one another (1 Thessalonians 5:11; Hebrews 3:13), spur one another on toward love and good deeds (Hebrews 10:24), offer hospitality (1 Peter 4:9), and love one another (1 Peter 1:22; 1 John 3:11; 3:23; 4:7; 4:11-12). That is what true biblical koinonia should look like.

Fellowship or a 'fellow shipping' assembly(Matthew 18:20)is where one can be consoled(and be a consoler), confess(and be a confessor) and confide(and find a confidant).

The Greek word is from Strong's 2842 and is used similar to that sense in Phil. 1:5. Keep in mind that some words have more than one meaning.

In my view, the biblical concept of fellowship relates to community, not in the sense that one is simply aware of another person, but that those persons are a part of ones daily life. Limiting the definition to one activity in particular misses the biblical imparative. I do not think that the general population whould have been amazed at "how they love one another", if there had not been more than passing relationships or a few shared activities. Though I do not hold to the morman theology or even their church government, I do believe we nonmormans have been put to shame by the understanding of this concept by many of the members of that church.
