wow thats a weird thing to hide.

not that i can remember... maybe i did in the past. right now im proud of my diet and anyone who wants to tell me some myth about doing something dangerous for my liver or something will get an appropriate response...

Not if all you can expect to receive it belittling and criticism it's not. I think you comment is pretty insensitive to those who prefer not to broadcast they are dieting for whatever reason.

Pat-rebel_lady -> RE: Have you ever dieted in secret? (6/24/2008 11:48:04 PM)

I prefer not to broadcast it when I'm dieting, fasting, praying, giving, and any number of things, but not because of being sabotaged or judged or any such thing by any earthly human being; my decision to chose to do something, for whatever reason, is just something between my Lord and me.

I've dieted in secret. It's called having an eating disorder.

WhiteRoseBlessings -> RE: Have you ever dieted in secret? (7/1/2008 2:27:12 PM)

Trish, would you explain that please?

I ask because dieting is not necessarily indicative of an eating disorder . . . and neither is dieting synonymous with anorexia nor bulimia.

I'm not sure what you mean by your post.

To answer the OP, I've never thought of it as "secretive," but yeah, I guess I do.

By that, what I mean is that more often than not, if I am eating specifically in a way as to loose weight, I would most probably choose to not talk about it . . . for the reasons that Aga listed.

Regarding fasting, I very much agree with Pat-Rebel Lay in that (spiritual fasting) is something to be shared only between Our Lord and me.

edited: The word "secret" -for me- seems to carry a negative connotation in regards to the OP.
I guess that's why I've never thought of my eating plan as secretive . . . it's not something I'm ashamed of (far from it, in fact); it's just something that I don't necessarily need to share every jot and tittle of such with other people . . . i.e, when I'm focused on loosing weight, I don't feel the need to tell people that I'm doing so nor do I feel it necessary -for me- to account to other people the specifics of what I have eaten or to give regular weight/size loss updates.

However, if people ask me or indicate an interest in healthy eating plans, I'm always happy to share my research with them.
And for me "healthy eating plans" encompass far more than just a means to loosing weight.

I was going to say nearly the same thing, Trish. I can see why one might want to not deal with pushy family members, but it's kind of like drinking--when you are hiding it, that is a huge red flag.

IonMoon -> RE: Have you ever dieted in secret? (7/1/2008 2:55:20 PM)

There wasn't a category that really fit- I picked yes, but maybe should have picked other.

I don't really "diet" but when I make changes to my eating to try to improve my health, I do not advertise it. I am not "secretive" per se, though. I just consider it private.

Miss Giggles -> RE: Have you ever dieted in secret? (7/1/2008 4:10:29 PM)

kind of. Because when you don't have a lot to lose you get snide comments from others. well I know I gained 10 pounds or so so it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that maybe i should lose those ten pounds.

timzagain -> RE: Have you ever dieted in secret? (7/1/2008 8:11:23 PM)

I wouldn't say that I am dieting, but I have made a commitment to a more healthy, active lifestyle. I focus on the quality of my food intake now.

I was always the "skinny one" in my family - had more than my fair share of skinny nicknames growing up. I could eat anything that wasn't nailed to the floor and not put on an ounce. However, in the last 2 to 3 years, I found myself putting on more weight than I was comfortable with. More importantly, I just didn't feel "fighting fit"

In Jan. 2007, my doctor gave me a long lecture and two weeks of sick leave, because my stomach was in a mess, my blood pressure and cholesterol were off the charts, I'd had too much weight gain in too short a time frame etc. Given my family's history of obesity, stroke, heart attacks, gastro-intenstinal disease etc - I decided to take the management of my health very seriously.

I felt very strongly that God was speaking to me about my stewardship of my body/ His temple, so I REFUSED to allow my family or workmates to get under my skin.

Perhaps, my family and colleagues felt threatened but I found myself at the receiving end of some less than supportive comments. My husband has had the same experience.

DH and I encourage each other and are trying to model an example of a healthy lifestyle for our children. We choose not to engage in too much conversation about our healthy choices with people who are unable or unwilling to understand or be supportive. We choose instead to lead by quiet example.

mayfly -> RE: Have you ever dieted in secret? (7/1/2008 8:23:08 PM)

Kind of... I was anorexic for several years, and I was secretive about it. Then, after recovering I actually gained a little too much weight and I had to hide my dieting so people who knew about my former condition wouldn't think I was relapsing.

SharMar, I don't feel comfortable eating in front of most people, including friends. John and Joan are the only people that I feel comfortable eating in front of, however, there are times when I eat things that aren't in front of them. A few years ago, I was diagnosed with non-purging type bulimia nervosa. I hid food in my room and nobody knew. I've had that behaviour since my teens.

So I was secretive of my eating habits and diet, due to my eating disorder.

his_chosen -> RE: Have you ever dieted in secret? (7/4/2008 2:53:59 PM)

I don't know if it was really "in secret". Four years ago I stepped on the scale and decided I didn't like the numbers. I made the choice to eat more fruits/veges and less processed sugar. I also started running. Without much effort, I lost the weight.

I did not make a big deal out of what I was doing. I don't think I even told my husband I was trying to lose weight. Is it really a "secret" to make healthier chioces?
