always liked the slowed down version of Help U2 played in the '80s
I also heard them do a slowed down Maggie's Farm that was better than any of the versions I've heard Dylan do.

Ghost Riders in the Sky - Johnny Cash (Vaughn Monroe)
And the Outlaws.

How about Benny Goodman playing the Beatles' "Blackbird"? If I were home with my jazz collection I could post for days. Those guys trade songs back and forth like crazy.

I love that song by ZZ Top and it is probably my favourite by them. Sam and Dave they just totally jam on it.

any song covered by Marilyn Manson (ESPECIALY The KKK Took My Baby Away. It is not humanly possible to describe how badly he butchered that song)

No, no...his cover of "Tainted Love" is really good--gives a totally different meaning to it. The Soft Cell version, is of course, fab.

And yet the Soft Cell version was a cover as well.

"You Really Got Me" & "Where Have All the Good Times Gone" by Van Halen

I love Van Halen cover of You Really Got Me. When I was a kid, they'd play the Kinks version followed by the VH version. Awesome!

They also did good/different versions both Pretty Woman and Dancing In The Street also.

I am now reminded of Donna Summer's disco remake of MaCarther Park as well.

Just heard "Working my way back to you" by Frankie Valley. Like the Spinners' version much better.

Yeah, I liked that one too, along with their follow up of Cupid also.

And a couple of Christian remakes that I can think of that I thought were good too:

Your Love Broke Through-Randy Stonehill

Love Resurection and I Just Want To Celebrate-Kim Boyce

Turn, Turn, Turn-Sheila Walsh

Make It Right-Kenny Marks

God Gave Rock & Roll To You-Petra

Lord, You're Beautiful-Kim Boyce

There are quite a few good covers on Keith Green's tribute "No Compromise: Remembering the Music of Keith Green" too such as:

By Grace In Which I Stand-Steve Green
He Will Take Care Of The Rest-Steven Curtis Chapman
You're Love Broke Through-Russ Taff
I Can't Believe It-Keith Green
Asleep In The Light-Michael Card
Summer Snow-Susan Ashton

Or, Start Right Here, another tribute to Keith Green by BEC Records featuring MxPx doing a 90mph version of "You Put This love in My Heart". There are a lot of great covers on that cd.

Yep. Maybe it's the only song that always sounds better as a cover?

How could we forget one of the greatest bands of all times - The Ramones.

California Sun (H.Glover/M.Levy) (Original band: The Rivieras)
Do You Wanna Dance? (Bobby Freeman) (Original artist: Bobby Freeman)
Let's Dance (Jim Lee) (Original band: Chris Montez)
Needles And Pins (Bono/Nitzsche) (Original band: The Searchers)
Surfin' Bird (White/Frazier/Harris/Wilson) (Original band: The Trashmen)
Surf City (Brian Wilson) (Original band: Jan and Dean)
[Taken from link listed below]

These are my favs but when researching I didn't truly realize how many covers they actually did!

Whole lot of Ramones cover songs!

Hmm.... ones that came to my mind:

The White Stripes' cover of I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself (Orig: Dusty Springfield)

Ben Folds - Tiny Dancer (Orig: Elton John) His Elton sparkly glasses are killer.

Ryan Adams phenomenally haunting cover of Wonderwall (Orig: Oasis)

(I think this one is my very favourite) Gary Jule's rendition of Mad World (Orig: Tears For Fears)

Barenaked Ladies - Lovers in a Dangerous Time (Orig: Bruce Cockburn)

The Dixie Chicks' take on Stevie Nick's Landslide.

Rufus Wainright's Hallelujah (Orig: Leonard Cohen) - tough call on that one, though. John Cale's version was good, too. Didn't care for Jeff Buckley's take.

Iron & Wine's rendition of the Postal Service's Such Great Heights.

And I must have missed it, because someone HAS to have mentioned Johnny Cash's version of NIN's Hurt.

David Usher - Fast Car (Orig: Tracy Chapman). . . . I wouldn't call it better (and the clip they chose here won't do it justice, but it was a nice alternative. Keep in mind I really love the original).

David Gray - Smile Like You Mean it (Orig: The Killers)

The Fugees featuring Lauryn Hill - Killing me softly with his song (Orig: Lieberman)

Nichole Nordeman - Time After Time (Cindi Lauper)

White Stripes - Conquest (Orig: Patty Page)

Goo Goo Dolls - Give a Little Bit (Orig: Supertramp)

The Wallflowers - I Started A Joke (Orig: Bee Gees)

There are so many more! I'm sure I'll revisit when I think of them.

Goo Goo Dolls - Give a Little Bit which was another good one too!

Needles And Pins is the only song I've heard the original verison of. Oh, I've also heard the original version of Baby, I Love You. I can't really judge the other ones, but I love Spiderman and I Don't Wanna Grow Up. The Ramones are easily in my list of the 10 all time greatest bands, though. Got me a Joey Ramone action figure hanging on my wall, too :D I can't wait 'til the rest of them are made.

I've also heard quite a few covers of Don't You Forget About Me by Simple Minds. IMO the only one I heard that was not a total trash was Billy Idol's version. Idk, maybe that's 'cos it was originally written for him to sing. The only other band name I can remember who covered it was Machine Head, and they wrecked it bad. Another cover of it by a band who's name escapes me did great on it but wrecked it at the end when they started doing weird voices. I just hope Marilyn Manson never decides to cover it.

Got a chance to see Joey Ramones grave at Hollywood Forever Cemetary when they had their annual "Dia de los Muertos" festival (see wiki for an explanation of that hispanic tradition). His gravestone is a square block of black marble(?) topped with an eight foot (?) tall statue of him playing his guitar. Since it was "Dia de los Muertos" they had the grave decorated with his favorite foods/drinks which consisted of Corona Beer and YOOHOO (the chocolate drink)!

Back on topic: Billy Idol also did a cover of the Tommy James song "Mony Mony"?

One album of mostly covers that I enjoy is the soundtrack to Me, Myself & Irene. Bad movie, but great soundtrack. In addition to a good Pete Yorn track, there are several mostly good covers of Steely Dan songs. Also, someone mentioned Ramones remakes earlier, and the album Acid-Eaters is chock full of good Ramones remakes ranging from Jefferson Airplane to Dylan. Their version of My Back Pages truly rocks.
