Should bus drivers be tested for drug and alcohol use?

Yes... I would be surprised if they are not.

I know our state requires school bus drivers to not consume alcohol within 8 hours of work and they must be completely drug free. They do random drug/al screenings.

And our local transit authorities do random alcohol/drug screenings (though I don't know if this is covered in our state laws).

And when there is a bus accident, they typically test the drivers.

I absolutely believe drivers should be tested!

Definitely!

And buses should have seat belts, too. If it is mandatory to buckle up when you are in a car, it should also be mandatory to buckle up when you are on a bus.

(And on school buses, it would keep the children in their seats--which *has* to be a bonus.)

I believe they should as well. In fact I believe in our district here in Indiana they are subject to random drug and alcohol testing. I also believe they should be PHYSICALLY able to move easily up and down the aisle of the bus with no trouble! We once had a bus driver that physically couldn't do it and that alone caused kids to misbehave because they KNEW the driver couldn't get back there to stop it very easily. Thankfully he was forced (bad health and dr.'s orders) into retirement a few years back.

I don't believe buses should have seat belts tho. The reason being is that the children themselves would be responsible for putting them on and adjusting the belts themselves and I don't believe too many young ones would be able to do this properly. Here in our district the same buses that take the highschoolers and middle schoolers to school come back to the neighborhoods an hour or so later and pick up the elementary children. Older kids would have them adjusted to fit their bodies and then the younger ones would get one and have to readjust them. And do it right. And ill or wrong fitting seat belt is just as if not more dangerous not wearing one at all especially on a school bus. But that's just my take on things.

Blessings,

Garsy

Yes, they should. My best friend's father is an alcoholic and he was my bus driver when I was in elementary school. So who knows if he's been drunk driving us.

So I think every person should be drug tested and alcohol use when they're going to be driving a bus.
