My soccer passion comes from my grandfather - he died when I was five - so I didn't know him - at all! But I do agree, it does come through the blood.

Well, my grandpa was from Chile......i've heard some stories from my dad about the country, turmoil and love.......and it is part of my blood! And then, in 2002 i spent a summer in Peru, working w/some missionaries who worked with the street children......and that was an amazing summer!

Cool...I see why now.

(gonna check out for now.....will catch up with all this later)

awww........what a precious picture!!!

But, then my next question.......does it have to do with nature vs. nurture????
I know God wired us......but, does that wiring take in effect the nurturing around us......?

Well, for me - after that picture was taken, I only saw him again one other time before he died. Before then, I was too young to know about his passion. So, I got it somehow. Also, my father never taught me about it either - so it had to come from somewhere.

When the Rowdies were formed in 1975, I knew I found something special, and it's continued to this day. I am the ONLY person in my family to have my grandfather's passion for soccer. He was a player; I am an administrator. But, we share the same love for the game. My father has said on numerious occasions that he wishes his father was still alive to see me having the same passion for his passion.

My first game watching soccer - I was hooked - the World Cup final in 1974 - Franz Beckenbauer hoisting the trophy. Then we got the Rowdies, and I began to learn the game. With ZERO prompting from my family, I fell in love with it - and then found out later about my grandfather's passion for it too.

Definitely in the blood!

I believe that for me, it's really my nature. I've pretty much tried a lot of things, and there are things that even if everyone is into, I'd never get into them. Also, my adventurous nature and love for the outdoors was never taught to me. All my families are homebodies. I remember first trying rock climbing and I knew that moment, it's something that would be a part of my life. The same for Africa and being part of a relief organization. If they are one TV, I'm just glued to it. There's a very strong pull where as my sisters who grew up the same way as I did could not care one bit. I definitely believed God wired us very specifically as individuals, but because of environment, some of us do not get to know those in born qualities. If I had stayed in my country of origin, I doubt if I would be given an opportunity to learn or do who I am wired to be.

I am very passionate about radio, and music. I love the medium of broadcasting and like studying up on what/how radio stations do things: the way they broadcast, compete, etc. I like traveling in part so I can listen to what stations other cities have as well.

Absolutely not. Most of the things I am passionate about my family was never involved in or still doesn't know exist.

If we start ascribing our interests to genetics then we have to say that homosexuality is genetic too. (and why would God create something that is abomination to Him? HE wouldn't). There is no soccer gene. There is no football gene. There is no Christianity gene. There is no foreign cultures gene. (And of course there is no homosexuality gene)

These things are all learned behaviors. We find something that we enjoy. It is a testament to God's creativity that all of us have different interests and every once in a while we are blessed by sharing those interests with our family.

(Now if you're passionate about chocolate or certain foods that may be genetic but I don't think that's what we were discussing here)

I know return you to your regular (non-soapbox) thread

And if there was a soccer gene wouldn't it have to be considered a birth defect?

But would you believe that God designed us to create a world that He had in mind, but because of our sinful nature, we don't always do what He designed us to do? I believe that God wrote sometime in my heart (that's the term that's commonly used in this forums, but for me, it means that He wired me to be a certain person with certain passion unique only to me), as part of the bigger picture. I might have spent the early parts of my life pursuing my selfish interests, but time and time again, there's that, call it "longing" in my heart that stirs my soul. Perhaps, as our sinful habit slowly falls away, we get to see who God made us to be.

Kinda new ageish, and I'm usually the logical type, but I honestly can't believe that God designed me as an empty vessel that the world can make and mold to whatever it chooses. Eventually, God's design becomes evident in who I'm becoming.

Lisa, help me out here, I'm confused. You say you got your soccer passion from your grandfather, genetically, because he died before he even knew of it. John says that's impossible, and you agree with him. Did I recap that correctly? How is this possible? I probably misunderstood something.

I know there is no "soccer gene" as John said. That is what I agreed with from his post.

I do believe that we do get a lot of things from our families, but I have no idea how - especially like in my case when he died when I was so young. That's one of the mysteries to ask God when getting to heaven.

I don't understand why I am like I am in this regards. God knew I needed to do what I need to do - and He put it into me for this very day. It just happens to be that it's the same as my grandfather. So, in some respect, it does come through the family - but I know there is not a "soccer gene".

Does that even remotely make sense???

Actually, yes it does, but please don't ask me how! You're right, it's just one of God's mysteries!

whew....I'm glad!

Speaking of passionate - I just talked to my referee friend who did the game last night - I am wanting to cry for him - it was such a GREAT game, AND such good things happened to him as a result. Even the losing team's announcers said what a good job he and the crew did calling the game. I just love these guys......truly, when I started working with the referees, I found my niche in soccer.

I'm going to cry now - out of pure happiness for him.

Romans 8 26-28

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. 27And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will.
More Than Conquerors
28And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him,[a] who have been called according to his purpose

I think of these verses when I see God's work in me and it's all for His glory from the start.

We may be predisposed to be passionate or interested in certain things. They have done studies of twins that were separated at birth and brought up in different adoptive families that had many of the same interests and taste in music, clothing, etc.

I get some of my passions from my Grammies passion for people. She was the ultimate servant. She was always doing for someone else. However, being as I am now in the lineage of Christ, I feel that most of my passions come from the Lord.

My Passions:

~The souls of men.
~Discipleship of new believers. ( I am very passionate about not squelching, but encouraging the zeal of new believers. It's like the honeymoon period of time, but many who are more mature in Christ are so quick to want them to "settle down and get serious" judging their every move and word. I think this is a travisty and grieves the heart of God.) Yep, definately passionate about that one.
~Education at all levels, academic and spiritual.
~the raising of children, all children, not just my own. Guarding their heart until they learn to guard their own from those things that a child should never see or hear or experience. Bringing them up in the way that they should go, with particular attention to Loving God and others and bearing fruit.
~Healthy Marriages

There's more but I guess I'll stop there.

~Blessings~
