ORIGINAL: narnia quote:

9-10But you are the ones chosen by God, chosen for the high calling of priestly work, chosen to be a holy people, God's instruments to do his work and speak out for him, to tell others of the night-and-day difference he made for you—from nothing to something, from rejected to accepted. 11-12Friends, this world is not your home, so don't make yourselves cozy in it. Don't indulge your ego at the expense of your soul. Live an exemplary life among the natives so that your actions will refute their prejudices. Then they'll be won over to God's side and be there to join in the celebration when he arrives.

LivePrayDream, I was raised similarly to the way you were raised, very open relationship with my mom, etc. And, you wouldn't believe some of the stuff I've done. There's a lot more roots to rebelling than just being sheltered or unsheltered. If MySpace hasn't changed the type of advertisements they have on their site by the time my boys are old enough to have one, they won't be getting one. Too many half naked women out there, so I certainly don't want them having to deal with that in my home. When my kids are awake I sometimes have to close myspace really quick because of a skimpy looking girl on there and come back to it when they are asleep. But, who knows, maybe someone will develop an in-page ad-blocking software by then. Yep, I'll be buying that for sure. My 2.5 year old has a computer in his room (there is a at least one computer in every room in our house), but he doesn't know what the internet is yet. He knows I can make pictures of Lightning McQueen appear in Google, but he doesn't know how to do it himself. When he knows how to use the internet, he'll be doing it in the living room, and then when he becomes a teen he can use it in his room when we Timbuktu into his machine from the machine in the family room and keep an eye on what he's doing. My hubby is a geek, so I don't think we'll be having many internet problems in our home.

If the internet had been available when I was a teen, I would've gotten into a lot of stuff that I shouldn't have. My parents were way too trusting with us, to the point that they were absent a lot of the time. Myself and my siblings are stricter with our children. The only one under 18 who has an open MySpace account is my 17 yo niece and she is very responsible. Her parents have access to her account. My 15 yo dd had an account, but I closed it due to her misbehaving online.

Not only do I teach this with my kids, but my husband and I both were taught this way as well. quote:
My husband was raised in that "strict Christian" household and when he turned 18, he rebelled by drinking, smoking, you name it. LivePrayDream: Umm, I'm confused. Was he raised one way, or the other? Just curious.

My dh is a missionary kid/pastor's kid whose parents wouldn't let him listen to Christian rock! It was a great concession to give him a Second Chapter of Acts album for a graduation present! He never rebelled by smoking, sleeping around or doing drugs. He did drink a bit his senior year of college, but it was not in rebellion to anything his parents taught him per se. It was a bit of foolishness on his part that he soon repented of. He loves his parents dearly and would never want to hurt them. So not everyone with strict parents goes wild. My dh did not, and neither did any of his three siblings.
