I have to chime in on the response about if a teen or other person is talking about suicide. Please do not wait to notifying the parents; speaking of suicide is an emergency. Call the parents as soon as you can reach them wherever they are. Suicide is not rational thinking. Nobody who has had anyone they love commit suicide says, "I wish I had waited longer." They say the exact opposite. My daughter, at age 8 yo spoke of suicide. She did not tell me until years later that she had a suicide plan worked out as well.

I haven't read all the posts, but I will second this. Two years ago, one of my jr. high students committed suicide at age 12 The ONLY reason I allow my students to friend me on MySpace and on Facebook is so I can read their blogs/bulletins/posts. I'm so afraid that one of them will say something that will go unnoticed because no adult knew how they were feeling... I think this helps drive the point home. Our kids want to be heard. Blogs and social networking sites are how they express themselves. While they may say they don't want us intruding on their lives, deep down they want ot know we're there and that we care. I was speaking with a teacher that my kids admire greatly. We were spaking about Facebook and Myspace and other social network sites. I was telling him some of my experience with what I'd learned about some of the kids in the school. He told me he did not want to know all the stuff going on in the lives of these kids because it would be too overwhelming. Unfortunately, I think too many adults take this approach, even with their own kids.
