ORIGINAL: MissInnocent Some of you already touched on this but I want to open it to everyone...what if instead of "maybe you shouldn't feed him/her that" you got told you SHOULD be feeding the child something you didn't want them to eat? I don't nes. mean junk food, just anything that you don't normally feed them or don't feel is a good idea for a young tummy? I can't think of anything that people have told me my kids should eat that I didn't agree with. WIC told me I need to give my baby juice, but his poops are fine, so he doesn't need it since he eats fruit. But, that was it. My mother seems to think that my 2.5 needs to drink more milk, and whole milk at that, but he gets 16oz. of 2% a day, and he is 40 inches tall and 42 pounds. He also enjoys cheese, yogurt and milk in his oatmeal on a regular basis. So, he gets plenty of calcium.

There are people who think I am nuts for giving my kids whole milk...they are teenagers. But they both are SO hungry and grow so fast and move so much, and I really don't think it's unhealthy. They eat just about anything except mushrooms and avocado, though.

LOL...my 1.5 year old who is the size of a 2.5 year old can! All kids are different! LOL! So can Gabby, and we have to make her a chicken breast at dinner because she will eat a half of one per meal plus some of a starch and some veggies. She is a HUGE eater right now. We haven't ever really gotten comments on what Gabby should/shouldn't be eating but we do get comments on what we eat as a family. But that's mostly because we eat extremely healthy and eat a good number of foods that aren't found on the average American's table.

ORIGINAL: MissInnocent May I ask like what kinds of foods. I'm always curious about the super healthy/slightly odd foods. No offense. I just have seen some things on celeb diets show that seem really interesting while other things make me go "um I don't think so." I'm not Ryanne, but due to allergies our kids have a very strict (and healthy!) diet as well. My guys LOVE things like liver, onions and Brussels sprouts. They feel gipped if I don't put avocado on a salad for them, etc. And this goes from the 7 year old right on down to the 18 month old. I haven't found a food these kids won't eat. Also, we make all of our own salad dressings, condiments, etc. (Yes, we make our own ketchup, mustard, and mayo!) It's just a part of everyday life for us ... far better than dealing with the hives and other reactions caused by the trigger foods (the boys all react to soy, chocolate, and artificial dyes -- even in toothpaste!)

We don't eat much in the way of white rice or potatoes(although we do occasionally eat red potatoes) we eat other starches like Quinoa, Bulgar, and Barley. We don't eat processed foods, we make almost everything from scratch including yogurt and kefir(a yogurt-like drink).

I don't consider any of the foods (though I haven't eaten them all myself) Kara and Ryanne listed as strange. And bless y'all for the lengths you go to in creating meals.

My kids always ate what we ate from the time they could sit up by themselves in the highchair. Sometimes I had to get creative with how I cut the food, or the type of noodles I used for things like spaghetti, but I guess when we were growing up, my grandma was feeding us mushed up meatballs when we could swallow them without choking. But that was when she babysat and our parents weren't around. My mom flipped the first time she saw Jake eating a piece of pizza. He was 4 months. It was just crust and sauce really, but still. Oh, and the doc wasn't too pleased, but as long as they are balanced meals, why buy expensive baby food when you can mush it up yourself. I loved doing sweet potatoes for them. And carrots and I would also boil down diced pears to make them soft. Things like that.

I have an 8 year old and a 2 1/2 year old. I feed them whatever they will eat!!! There are a lot of "guidelines" that people say you should follow but every child is different and eat things at different stages. My first dd didn't like jar baby food. My second dd loved it. Second one loves milk. (in any flavor) First one, only choco milk. Oldest doesn't eat much fruit or veggies but likes the V8 with real fruit and veggie juice. You find what works and go with it. OH, I also give them, as well as myself, a multi-vitamin everyday. My children are healthy and happy.

I would love to know how to make my own ketchup. I know what goes in it, but not how to make the ingredients taste good together. One thing I would like to do is eat healtier foods that have not been processed, waxed, or been sprayed with chemicals. But around here, that is hard because while we do have healthfood stores, they are not close by and quite expensive.

ORIGINAL: MissInnocent For parents here, have you fed toddlers regular size hamburgers, pizza, beef stew and country gravy? Those are the only things I can think of at the moment that my mother and I were questioning my brother and his fiancee feeding their grandson. Oh yeah and caffiene (no wonder the child stays up till 1-2 in the morning). If the answer to any is yes please be specific about the age. Thanks. Yes...we've fed both our children (36 months and 16 months) 'regular size' hamburgers (they share my hubby's bbq burgers), pizza (we have pizza every Friday night), beef stew (the one I make is delish!), country gravy (only if it's with my homemade biscuits)...and caffeine, absolutely! We give our Hannah 'coffee' in the morning if she asks for it (mostly creamer) and coke on the rare occasion, and of course who could forget chocolate? Your friend or relative's child who is permitted to stay up to 1-2 in the morning should be put on a schedule...but that has nothing to do with having burgers, pizza, beef stew, country gravy, or caffeine...it's possibly about a lack of discipline or parenting skills... quote:
Food and child-raising are both highly personal. Unless my young relative was clearly malnourished or heading to a lifetime of unhealthy obesity, I would mind my own business. I agree completely...

Thanks. are they forcing them to eat the regular sized food? adult portions? Because that would be the only thing that would concern me with the hamburgers, pizza, beef stew and gravy. The food types are acceptable as long as they aren't being made to eat an adult sized portion. Caffeine is a questionable one...at times we have let our little ones have small amounts of it...but not on a regular basis...but that said....staying up till 1 or 2 in the morning is MORE of a training/allowing the child to stay up. Caffeine wears off pretty quickly..even in a child..and is more likely to cause irritability and dehydration in a small child than to keep them up... but really...this is not your business short of just being concerned. it is their child and as long as they are not force feeding the child.......
