How about excuse yourself to the ladies room just in case you have something stuck between your teeth? It also gives you ample opportunity to "powder your nose" etc.

Here's one: DON'T take the toothpick from the restaurant and pick your teeth in front of your date.

Keep the volume of your voice to a medium. Laugh, but don't over do it making it look like you are forcing it, or appearing that you are nervous.

Well...getting back on track...a tip from Emily Post (1943 edition of her Etiquette book)

(and this is totally paraphrased....my book is at home).

Ladies should never powder their noses at the dinner table in front of her guest. Powdering your nose gives the appearance that you were not perfect to begin with and need assistance to acheive that perfectedness that your date may have not noticed in the first place. Always excuse yourself to the restroom to take care of such tasks.

Would that include lipstick
Agreed! Just looks tacky, imo.

I'm in trouble. I have a loud, obnoxious Juila Roberts laugh.

I can't remember if this has already been offered, but I say just be yourself. The person's going to find out who you are sooner or later anyway.

So laugh to your heart's content, Tink!

Here's another one. If you must bring a gift, do NOT bring a living creature of any kind. He/She may be allergic. Not to mention, if is does NOT work out, that person will think of you (and prolly not in a good way for giving such a gift) every time they see that animal.

Do a little research before buying anything really.

Some women don't like chocolate and flowers for Valentine's Day.

Some women want little nicknacks covered in lace. *shudders*

The more research you do early on, the more attention you'll get from her...you know, asking her friends about her tastes and stuff like that. Total brownie points!

Definitely a terrible idea!

The second or third date you can let it rip! The first date is just the "meet and greet" stage you'll know with your best judgement if you want to share your joy.

See..that's just not how I am. What you see is what you get...every time. Besides, wouldn't it be better for me to know if he can't stand my laugh then to let it loose later and find out he hates it? And wouldn't it be better for him to know I sound like I have mad cow disease early on and figure out if he can stand it enough?

Okay...just let it rip after he pays the food bill.

And if it works out very badly you will be responsible for the horrible life that poor little animal will have as your one time date comes home and kicks the poor thing as a surrogate for kicking you. Do you really want that on your conscience?

Don't mention marriage.

Guys especially - don't start unloading all of your junk: past failures, inner struggles, ...etc...

Didn't you see my story? The one that said

MY FUTURE HUSBAND ASKED ME TO MARRY HIM ON THE FIRST DATE!

Ok, yeah, it was prolly not the best idea. And I turned him down. But it was special circumstances, too.

But then we ended up getting married and staying married until his death. So...all I can say is, be led by the Spirit!

One of my best friends told me that she knew on her first date that she would marry the guy. Of course, I don't think she TOLD him that. But sure enough it happened!

I know a lot of people who have said they knew they were going to marry their spouse on the first date. My mum said when she walked into the drug store my dad was working in she knew she was going to marry him.

And he was engaged at the time.

That does give a whole new meaning to the line "Do you believe in love at first sight, or should I walk by again?"

K, I like that line. I will use it once I build up the nerve. I am a wimp when it comes to meeting guys in public.

Oooh, another tip from above-mentioned housemother:

Always allow the guy to open a door for you. If he fails to take the intiative, simply stand at the door and wait. Then thank him for being so kind as to open the door for you. If he doesn't pick up on the clue, move on to guy #2.

Indeed! I feel a little put out if a woman opens her own door. It puts me in the habit of not doing it, and I don't like that.

And on the flip side. Guys, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS be a gentleman. Open doors, walk on the traffic side of the sidewalk, offer your arm or hand on uneven terrain, pull out her chair.

Now I never heard of that one before, why is that? Also, that wouldn't really work in Boston at all.

Never knew the sidewalk one? Even Goofus and Gallant in Highlights magazine when I was a preschooler knew that one! LOL You do it so that if a car splashes or careens into the sidewalk, it is you that gets dirty or dead instead of the lady.

Nice for your mom, but I bet the other girl was heartbroken. I hope she met someone else, though .
