Even in their purest form, the Olympics were never about athletes trying to "get along." They were about athletes trying to defeat the others and become champions. In ancient Greece, yes. And while there's no doubt that politics and competition has always been part of the games (e.g. the 1980 Winter Games hockey match between the US and USSR), I would like to think the olympics reflects humanity in a spirit of goodwill and peace. IMO, the olympics also remind us that despite often vast cultural differences, that people are essentially people no matter where you go.

However, I'm certain that many "underground" churches exist as well, especially in the countryside where the government can't keep an eye on people as easily as in major cities. quote:

Do you know ANYTHING about the Christian persecution going on in China? Do you actually think that the "state" churches are free to worship Christ Jesus in spirit and in truth? Do you deny that HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of Christians in China are imprisoned yearly because they will not put the Chinese government over God? (BTW that is EXACTLY what is happening in these "state" churches). You know it is funny. The same people who in America and other western countries demand a separation of Church and state, are the SAME ONES who praise China for its "state" churches.

ORIGINAL: Stephanos Do you know ANYTHING about the Christian persecution going on in China? I know a little. Typically, it's a result of Christians protesting against the government. That is, Christianity is incidental to their persecution, not causal. That doesn't stop people from bundling them together though. It's great publicity if you can say you were persecuted because of your religion. I think Koreans under Japanese rule did similar things, and it tended to work (up until Japan started invading pretty much everyone nearby, then they didn't really care what Christians thought)...

In the very recent building craze that went on just prior to the Olympics in Beijing, what is the rate of occupancy in those highrises. Shopping malls were also built. Are they filled with shoppers? Are there even any shops in them?

Are there even any shops in them? You'll have to forgive me, I haven't been to Beijing yet. I've been intentionally avoiding it because of the craziness of the Olympics... though having seen the opening ceremony on television, I think that was a big missed opportunity on my part. Oh well. If you value anecdotes at all: Where I'm at, Hangzhou, development is going along swimmingly. There are a few empty buildings, but at the same time, there's more and more new wealth filling them up. I am very, very surprised at the progress and wish I had more knowledge of economics to understand how it works, as it is absolutely breathtaking. There is still massive poverty and inequality here, but it is unquestionably getting better. With respect to shopping centers... they're always full in Hangzhou (a new one, biggest in the province I think, was opened a two or three months ago in this town, always full), and I can only assume the same for Beijing.
