I saw the movie on Saturday, and I quite enjoyed it. Bill Maher made some excellent points. To me, it didn't seem that he was attacking religion as a whole, but attacking the extremism that often comes from fundamental beliefs and the danger it poses to the civilised world. Yes, there was some mockery. My brother, who is a strong Christian, was able to endure it without any problem and it had no effect on his faith. Most of the jokes seemed to be not Maher's fault, but the people he was interviewing. They said things that made them sound incredibly foolish. Editing, perhaps, arranged it to be more obvious, but in general it was the people's words, not anything Bill Maher said, that made those he interviewed seem crazy or outlandish.

Yoy know. atheist, a few years back, did not do so publicly, they kept in the closet, and were not considered the norm. Where has the US, went wrong?

We've gone wrong by the only displays of Christianity is the "name-it- and claim-it" folk and we've allowed vocally abusive people be the representation of Christ. Only by living a life pleasing to God and reaching out to our neighbor can we effectively reach people for Christ.

The devil will do everything he can to defame Christ, but we as Jesus' hands and feet must be salt and light without coming off crass and unloving.

BTW, I wouldn't waste my money with a jerk like Maher...

Kind of reminds me of that song in the 80's....."One way or another...I'm gonna find you....I'm gonna get ya, get ya, get ya, get ya!!"

(?Was that Blondie???)

Something tells me Bill Maher isn't too worried about The-Cosmic-Boogie-Man perspective inherent in the above statements.

Did anyone here actually see the film?

I saw it, and it isn't just Christians who are featured. His target seems to be religious belief in general. Islam takes a pretty good wrap on the knuckles, as well as Judaism.

He doesn't just feature extremists.....I suspect more than a few of the participants here might see themselves in some of the POVs featured.

I agree with the poster who stated he thinks Bill is struggling with the "I just don't know" POV. However-I thought his conclusion a bit harsh.

Some atheists can be as vile and close minded in their belief system as the most ignorant fundamentalists I have ever had the misfortune to meet. I didn't see much of that throughout the film, but did see a bit of it in his conclusion.

There are places where I thought he was generally respectful of the people he was interviewing (truckers chapel for instance); but other times I felt he was almost harassing folks....If he had stuck with the former I think he would have had a better film.

Actually-For folks who are confident in their faith-It wouldn't be a bad film to see....It might help folks learn to explain their faith to non believers or questioners with more than the "Believe My Way or Burn" method of evangelization.

I would also recommend it for bible students/pastors in training. Not a bad start for Apologetics training.

Real people with Real questions might look just a bit different to folks who rarely venture outside of church circles.

Wonder if the guy interviewed individuals such as Chuck Colson, John Stott, or John Piper? If he did I bet the found the cutting room floor.

I'm not sure who made the cutting room floor and who didn't-but some of the interviews were fascinating, and yes-funny.

A priest in the vatican.

A muslim guide @ the dome of the rock. (who when questioned about how women are viewed in Islam points out that women are allowed in and "have a corner" @ the Dome of the rock....)

A Mullah, and Danish muslims he isn't so quick to let off the hook.

A rabbi, and a jewish business that makes products to get around the "work on the sabbath" rule. (Loophole products as Maher referred to them-amusingly so and correctly I think....)

The Jesus actor and tourists @ that Christian "Holy Land" park in florida. (used the camera shots there in an interesting way to point out the bizarre combination of balloons/souvenir/tourist type stuff for sale in a place that also offers a live bloody re-enactment of the crucifixtion....right along with tourists taking pictures of the "show" as if they were at a Disneyland Parade....) I have to admit it does make you think.....

He also interviewed some big shot @ the Creation Museum and A Christian Senator, as well as some burly looking Christian truckers @ a truckers chapel.

I think some here might find it interesting-if they can take their faith being questioned that is.

Though be forewarned-it is R rated so leave the kiddos @ home.

Didn't want anything that would disprove his thesis? His film proves that he is religous in his hatred of organized religion.

Why should I pay $ to have my faith largely insulted for a couple hours?

No I won't be seeing it. If it would have been simply a dialogue/questioning on religion, that might be more interesting. But from what I've read on the movie, it's moreso putting down and mocking faith rather than interacting with it.
Pluggedinonline.com has a review on it.

I'd watch it if it were on tv, but I wouldn't likely pay to see it. I'm not scared it'll insult me in any way, I just don't find him to be as funny or insightful as he thinks he is. I like sarcasm as much as anybody, but he tends to rely on cheap shots and incredulity too much for my taste.

funny you mention about the 9-11 hijackers. I was thinking about a tangent argument where Maher doesn't seem to cover Eastern religions like Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism, Shintoism, and other "isms" that any of us think The Real Time host should have focused his equal energies with--given in my personal experience, I would think the Buddhist/ancestral worship practices of my family will fall more into Maher's criteria of what's truly "religulous."*

*things like my Dad used to tell me that if I don't do good, I'll reincarnate as a piece of bovine--uh, I mean rib eye steak! ...never mind the fact that there's something here called animal rights--in an ironically "pro-choice" juncture of modern history(!), but that will be a basis for another thread!

Haven't seen and probably won't, but there is something about the Holy Land clip I saw in the commercials that really bugged me. I know that the Holy Land park is now a part of the Crouch, Inc. camp (TBN et al), but I can't figure out how he managed to get the interview. If the Crouch family has any idea of what goes on outside their WOF bubble, they'd have known that there's a 99.9% chance whatever Bill Maher was showing up there for, it was probably for some Christian-bashing purpose.

Has anyone else heard of this movie: http://www.religulousmovie.net/? I only heard of it this morning. Any thoughts?

Adam,

It was produced by Bill Maher, who is an atheist.
I heard Don Imus interview him when it came out, and it is a total mockery of Christianity.
Suffice to say, I'll never put a dime in Maher's pocket.

I plan to see this film. I've actually been a Bill Maher hater for a long time, until recently.

Seeing his interview on The Daily Show with John Stewart really opened my eyes to what is going on. He said he is not an atheist, he just doesn't know what to believe. That tells me he is desperate to find something to believe in. Strip away all the sarcasm and anti-religious venom and you have what we all are; poor lost souls in need of a Savior.

Before we all condemn him to hell, maybe we should take a closer look at his plight and pray for him. If ever there was a soul in need of rescue his would be the one.

That makes him an agnostic, does it not?

I havent seen the movie and I care not to, but I seen an interview of hom on I think 20/20 or something like that. He is an idiot, a total fool! He blasphemied God! When Jesus comes back he is in for a huge wake up call. I pray that his cold hard heart, will become warm and soft with the overflowing love of Jesus Christ. We should pray for him.
