It's Mary Mary...you judge for yourself. I personally have no problem with them. They are from the COGIC church where women couldn't even wear pants. They love Jesus and represent him to a primarily secular audience...and yes, their label is owned by Sony...

I think that's pretty conservative (for them).

Back during the 80's and early 90's, there was a certain Christian artist who was fully clothed and yet I found her attractive. I felt convicted that I should get rid of the album cover. I never did though, go figure.

What!? You're telling us that frumpiness ain't next to Godliness? That would be a shocker to many Christians I know.

Hey, when I was 18, I fell head-under-heels (what does head-over-heels mean, anyway? That's where my head usually is! Does that mean something?) for some young brave -- a First Nations guy who performed in a Christian band with his family. I had to get over him, too, because after all, at 18, I was already engaged!

Should Christian artists all wear robes covering them from neck to floor? It would be kinda hard to rock out dressed up like a Mormon Tabernacle singer and dangerous, too. This is not to say that boobies and hoo-hoos should be hanging out everywhere.

How about a nice shirt and jeans for everyone? Would that pass muster?

Unfortunately, you can't win for losing. In many church circles, a suit and tie would be appropriate for men, but my wife tells me I look "hot" in a suit and tie. Is "hot" really the image I want to project? (Not that I think I do, but for the sake of argument... ).

Like another poster said....when did "frumpy" equal "holy"?

I'm not sure those questioning the appropriateness are saying that necessarily. I think it's more an issue of what image you're trying to present to the public (both Christian and secular).

You know, this does bring up a good point about the relationship between music and sexuality - particularly in popular music. A co-worker of mine recently went to a Janet Jackson concert; need I go any further? But as record labels try to market some Christian artists to a secular audience, I would imagine that there would be a little more emphasis placed on sex-appeal...ESPECIALY for female artists. Some time ago, there was a discussion on another board about weather or not Kirk Franklin's latest CD cover -'The Fight of My Life'- was a no-no (of course it wasn't....IMO ). But the album depicts Franklin as a boxer and as is the case with boxers, he is shirt-less. No big deal. The context of the cover was definatley not intended to provoke a sexual response, but some people in the church seem to feel otherwise.

LOL! Actually, for as short as he is, he is in very good shape. I remember my first interview with him. My assistant - a female- was putting the mic on him and his chest was muscular. I remember the comment to this day.

The fault is with the person who gets all flustered behind it since the boxer dress was appropriate for depicting the inner struggle.

Hey Rockitd, I wasn't saying that there was anything wrong with the album cover at all. What I meant was that I was having issues with it, because of me instead.

Believe it or not, I do believe that sexuality is sometimes used, even in Christian circles. Back in the 80's, I knew some new Christian women who had issues with the band Stryper not wearing their shirts at all.

Also, I believe artists such as Amy Grant and even Natalie Grant have had on their album/CD covers what would be considered visually appealing as well.

True, on the other hand, God's people should also be careful too and not to project an image that will stumble a weaker brother and sister who is struggling with things, including sex.

I'ts ok to dress in the latest trends and everything, but at the same time, whether you are a christian recording artist or someone who works in the secular music industry and of the faith, modesty should be practiced in choosing clothing.

Now, I'm not saying that Mary Mary was wrong in choosing their attire, and I'm not standing in judgement of these people, but they should have chosen something else to wear that would have been a better witness to their faith.

And yes, I'm going to get their CD and still continue to support them.

I vaguely remember reading about an incident similar to what you mentioned when Kathy Trocolli came out with her self-titled "comeback" album (the one with "Everything Changes") as a crossover album, and she reportedly expressed frustration with the fact that the label (believe it was a secular label) she released the album with tried to emphasize the sex appeal factor, to the point where she ended up walking away from that deal.

Have you folks ever looked at the banner ads that pop up around this place?

I honestly can't imagine how the ladies in question could have taken more care not to stumble the "weaker brothers and sisters" (side note: anybody else as sick of walking on eggshells and twisting scripture just to make sure they're not "offended" as I am?) unless they wore gunny sacks. Of course, I'm sure there are people out there with some weird thing about gunny sacks that would get "stumbled" over that too.

As Paul Washer says it: If your clothes are a frame for your face, God is pleased. If your clothes is a frame for your body, it's sensual, and God hates it.

I am starting to get the feeling, Gayle1, that you wouldn't be satisfied until they had a shirt up to their neck. Shades of Victorian England? Maybe the hijab wasn't a stretch for your more refined (extreme) sensibilities.

What's good for the goose...
I herein decree that all male christian artists must wear long sleeve shirts as to not "tempt" the female congregants into lust! Those bulging biceps might lead them astray!

Heck! Hijabs for us all! Men and Women!

Why do I feel like I just walked into an Amish world filled with computers when I come to this forum a lot of times?

Are there brothers you know who are stumbling because of their dress? Being attractive people has definitely been used in the industry - sacred & secular. I don't think what Tina and Erica wore was in bad taste. As I stated earlier, they are from a traditionally "holiness" background - COGIC - where it was once a sin (and is still in some circles) for a woman to wear pants.

Clothing is subjective unless they are half-naked. I think we should look at the heart of the artist, not what they are wearing.

I agree for the most part with this, but what we wear is a visual indicator of the heart. True immodesty in a society indicates a heart that is either ignorant of what is acceptable as modest or an unsavory attitude or both.
