ORIGINAL: Consecrated2God Here's an example of what I personally feel gossip and slander is. Let me talk about Obama for a minute. I disagree with just about everything he stands for. I will point to some of the bills he has signed, such as voting against the Born Alive Protection Act, which would require that babies surviving abortions get medical care. This is true, and not gossip. It's also not slander. There is a reason I am telling people this--it's important to know what kind of legislation he supports, since he's running for public office. Although, to be completely truthful in your statement about Obama's voting record, you should also say that the state already had laws on the books requiring a doctor to provide medical care to any child that survived an abortion. The law was nothing more then a political stunt, and not actually needed for the reasons stated. One should always be cautious, because often the reasons why a statesman voted against a law are not the reasons the opposition would tell you. Often the wording of a particular law is so vague and poor, that there is fear the law could be used as a jumping off point to make other laws, which is exactly what happened with the case you stated above. A die-hard conservative I know is considering voting against a pro-life amendment to her state's constitution, because the wording of the law could quite likely be used as a jumping off point for outlawing birth control and abortion needed to save a mother's life. My point? When telling the truth about a public figure, it is possible to speak truthfully, but withhold part of the story, thereby giving a false impression.

I consider them shows like ET,TMZ,etc waste of broadcast time not really in the interest of the public. As for the mags like National Enquirer,Star,People. they are garbage.

In fact they rank right down there with Jerry Springer,Maury Povich. Sensationalism at its worst.

Regarding the argument that they put themselves out there, so we can say whatever we want... Say I'm in the grocery store and get angry at someone. I go off on them verbally- yelling, screaming, generally throwing a fit. I'm not a celebrity, but I've chosen to have a fit in public and let others see it. Does that give my fellow church members the right to sit around and discuss my behavior? Yes, they've placed themselves in the spotlight, but aren't we, as followers of Christ, called to a higher standard than the world? --Kat

According to the Dictionary, the definition of gossip is: 1. idle talk or rumor, esp. about the personal or private affairs of others: the endless gossip about Hollywood stars. 2. light, familiar talk or writing. 3. Also, gos·sip·er, gos·sip·per. a person given to tattling or idle talk. and 6. to talk idly, esp. about the affairs of others; go about tattling. I would say that depending on your definition of gossip, it either is ok or not ok. If you are talking about someone famous then it really isn't gossip unless it is unknown private information instead.

I'm pretty sure gossiping in any form is not pleasing to God....with that said, that is something I truly have to work on. But I'm getting better. :o)
