Just as bad as Christian music as some of you believe. There just happens to be a metric ton more secular music than Christian music. This means that, of course, they have ten times as many innovative, cutting-edge artists as Christian music. They also have a hundred times as many uninteresting, uninspiring artists. To paint Christian music with a broad brush as being unartistic and irrelevent is equivalent to saying Christians in general are less sophisticated or less intelligent than your average heathen. Do you really believe that? Is there something about salvation that shrinkens the creative part of your brain? C'mon, secular music snob.

What's the difference between a Metric Ton of horse feathers and a standard (2000 pound) Ton of pig wings?

Jimbo, I love the picture! I was a huge fan of Star Trek:TNG when it was live. I never got into the other Star Treks much. I'm going to have to set up my DVR to capture some ST:TNG episodes now...

I'm also a huge fan of Patrick Stewart.

BTW, a lot - and I mean a LOT - of the old hymns took their music from "secular" songs, even barroom music.

About 204.62 pounds.....That is assuming you could find enough of either of those items to make the indicated weights.

I think the question should be:

IS "christian" music of better/worse/the same quality as "secular"?

If so, WHY, and what does it say about the christians/"secularians" involved?

"Earl Grey, Hot!" and "Make it so #1"

BTW, does that make them hymns sinful by association?

Never knew I could be singing a drinking song at church!

NealMorseFan I'd caveat that some does and very badly at that!

It's true that many christian vocal works used the melody from popular secular songs (drinking songs, rowdy songs, spiting songs etc.) and put christian texts to them. Made it easier for people to remember them, knowing the catchy tune from before.

Secular music sucks? You really believe that? So I guess you hate The Star Bangled Banner, and the ABC Song? What a silly, reactionary view.

To me it doesn't matter what genre of music you play in. You either have a gift to play or sing or you don't. I love music no matter what kind. I'm open to listening to just about anything, and then decide, whether I will listen to it on a regular basis or not. Some secular artists become Christians does that effect how they play? Christian artists join the secular market, does that affect how they play? Everything I've said is based on performance and not the content of their lyrics. Do you base your decision on what you listen to? (whatever kind of music) -on talent, content of lyrics, style? That may play into your decision on what you might think is good or not.

This is actually being proven to have been nothing more than a myth:

The confusion possibly comes from the songs of that era being written in "bar style"...a type of Medieval poetry...as opposed to being written to a "bar tune"...a song for local drunkards to croon at the pub.

Yeah, I completely agree. There are a LOT more non-christian bands / artists / songs that just purely suck then there are christian bands / artists / songs that suck. There are also a LOT more non-christian bands / artists / songs that are better than christian stuff. It's because the non-christian music scene is much MUCH larger than the christian.

I get a different story from reading from the links you provided. And people did not always go to all "bars" to get drunk and bawdy. There were even coffee bars in Mozart's day.

But the main point is that many, many hymns took their music from "secular" songs - and popular "secular" songs have long been sung or played in pubs & bars for ages.

BTW, having been a music major, I'm not overly confused about the use of the term barroom or bars when I use them.

Reading y'all's discussion reminded me of this song by Glad...

Glad - that hymn thing

It's common knowledge among early music performers (up to and including baroque, for our purposes at least) that tunes from the tavern were also used to sacred music. How do we know? From contemporary manuscripts: Same tune, different texts.

The link in my last post is a well known example of this.

I think we're forgetting to factor in that what a lot of people describe as music is just what the Music Industry ("Christian" or non) pushes out there on folk.

The industry execs want safe and "proven" genres that will sell without too much work in trying to promote.

There are a lot of great "Christian" bands out there who will never get the attention they deserve because they're not "safe" enough or fit into the standard mold the industry requires.

I would partially agree with the OP, in that a lot of secular music is prefabricated junk. Anyone who says "All Christian music is bad, all secular music is good," hasn't listened to enough of either - or they just have, well, tastes that I would not agree with.
There are some truly beautiful, innovative Christian artists out there. Sufjan Stevens springs to mind. mewithoutYou. Five Iron, when they were around... : ( But sadly, there's also a lot of prefabricated junk on the shelves of Christian bookstores.

What man's junk is another man's gold! Music is a a subjective thing. What one person thinks is the greatest artist/band in the universe is nails on a blackboard to another.

Music is like grading on a bell curve. The place where most people are at in the groups they listen to are in the middle of the curve, hence, the amount of mediocre music taking up space on our airwaves and store shelves.

Oh, I'm not saying that some music, even poorly produced music, can't be enjoyed by some people. But there is still a measure of skill/talent that can be obvious to any listener. By way of example, most rap music I've heard (which, I admit, is a relatively small amount) does not have a great deal of musical talent being demonstrated (arguably there is lyrical talent there, but that is, in my opinion, distinct from musical talent). Similarly, singers/groups that rely on machines to "fix" their vocals don't demonstrate great musical ability - they demonstrate access to fancy equipment.
Some music is just formulaic. You can tell that the performer is putting together the song because they know it will sell, not because they were moved to write it. That doesn't mean that people can't enjoy it. I'm sure that some of the songs I enjoy listening to would fall into that category. However, that doesn't make it good music. Or to put it another way - I enjoy eating at Taco Bell, but that doesn't make it good Mexican food.
