I'm listening to a local radio program and a caller said that she believes they failed as parents because their daughter got pregnant. I must say that I did roll my eyes, I know bad habit, but I have to disgree with this caller. Do some actually believe that when our kids make bad choices, we're considered bad parents? God doesn't even guarentee that if we raise our kids to be obedient to him that they'll never fail. How can some believe this way.

If you're a Democrat, who is wanting to bash on Sarah Palin, the answer is, "Yes!" Beyond that, though we certainly can and should bring our children up correctly, we cannot always control every decision they make.

No clue as to how some can believe this way.

your so right about that, as parents we do our best i know we have 4 children and 2 of them are out on thier own, one in the army and the other one is in college. we have worried at times if we did the right things when they were small? but........we have always told them that they can come home anytime, they can tell us anything anytime. we have told us that when we were younger we made some mistakes so we know that at times it can be scary to tell the parents but we still love them no matter what.

No parent is perfect, but even the most marvelous parent can raise a child that makes a mistake. And even the best kids mess up once in a while, sometimes very badly. It's how the parents handle that mistake afterward that determines if they are a success or failure. So far, I've seen no reason to think anything else but that the two of them are doing the best they can for their kids. You can't ask for more.

Thank you - those insights are very good, especially for an Obama supporter! You know, the girl COULD have had an abortion, and nobody would have known anything about it - even her parents. I'd say all of them are doing the best thing, under the circumstances.

That is so far off base that it is out in left field. If the caller had said they failed as parents because their daughter was having sex, I could have at least respected her 'right' to have a personal viewpoint. But to say that the parents' failure was evidenced in the pregnancy makes the caller look like a fool. I suppose pumping their daughter full of birth control pills and running condom checks on the guy would have made them stellar parents? quote:
I must say that I did roll my eyes, I know bad habit... Go ahead. Let those eyes roll! Scripture talks about a rod for the back of fools, so if you let her off with an eye roll, you were merciful.

Agreed. Sometimes a roll of the eye is absolutely the right response.

Sadly, I've seen some very unkind comments regarding the Palin's and their situation coming from Christians as well. Of all people, you'd think we Christians would have a sense of humility about things like that, given our track record as His kids. Seems like if you stand up and do the right thing by your family, you'll take bullets from both right and left.

Maybe some feel that way cause they don't know God and forgiveness. Each person has choices and the consequences. We can do our best to guide them, but once they leave, they make their choices - good or bad. How many of us really listened to everything our parents told us? Or did things they told us not to do. We all think "it won't happen to me". Since giving more of me to God, I've found that I don't judge people and their mistakes as quick. Sure I don't agree with them, and many times have to bite my tongue and not tell them "I told you so"; but we all live and learn. I don't consider them bad parents cause their daughter chose to sleep with her boyfriend before marriage. God's perfect plan is to marry the right person, then have kids............but we choose to do it our way; not God's way. I just pray that their marriage will last. Its tough starting a family before you get a chance to just have time for yourselves and build a strong base.

Most democrats I know don't like Palin because of her politics. That is what they "bash" her for, if bashing is not being all lovey-dovey on the woman. I don't agree with a lot of her stances on the issues, but I really don't care much about her children at all. They just don't factor into my thoughts concerning the election. If any politician tried tried at act as though their children were perfect, then I'd be calling them out. Palin just has children who are human beings.

Why when someone says anything against Sarah Palin is it automatically the Democrats bashing? I have heard plenty of bashing from the other side too, including accusations of terrorist ties and very racial comments. As to the original post, I am in no way able to judge the Palin's parental skills. They may have neglected teaching their daughter both morally as well as the basic information regarding reproduction. However, since I was not in their house I have no business commenting on their parenting, nor does anyone else. I do appreciate the fact that they have chosen to help their daughter and not chosen abortion. However, my personal feelings have little to do with how I will vote.

I suppose Eli and Samuel failed as parents, too....their kids weren't the sharpest tools in the shed either.

I have heard them criticize everything from her politics to her shoes to the fact that her kids are with her at events. Rediculous, seriously. I know it's mostly a specific group(a group of women on another forum), but either way it's annoying. I don't see what the big deal is... her kids are human and thus open to the sinful desires of man.

But applying double standards is a very human thing to do, just like having premarital sex. Ryanne, I can't speak to this other forum you read (because I have no idea what it is), but even if someone did make a crack on her glasses or something, I think most folks wouldn't be basing their vote on her fashion sense.

Jumping in blindly... I just wonder at what point can people say they raised their kids right, but at the end of the day their daughter has a mind as well as free will of her own. As parents all we can do is lead by example, teach them right from wrong, and pray over them daily. At some point they are going to have to make decisions on their own and sometimes they are going to be the dumbest decisions. But, that is part of growing up and learning what life is all about. No I do not condone teenage pregnancy, but I also do not blame the parents for her actions. I have known one to many teens who got pregnant in their teen years while being raised in a good home and church. It bothers me that the blame is being put on the parents when in reality Palin nor her hubby made the decision for their daughter to have premarital sex thus ending up pregnant in her teen years. She made the decision with guy she had sex with and they are reaping the consequences of that decision.

whoever is without sin may cast the first stone. God is our judge, therefore judging one another's actions is wrong. We are to judge ourselves. Most people aren't educated as children in this way of thinking.

It is an interesting question though... DH and I were just talking about this in a roundabout sort of way on the way to Church on Sunday. More specifically... how to teach and raise a child who doesn't become the highschool tramp. I think we basically came to the conclusion that we can do everything possible to raise a child the "right" way and because our nature is to sin AND we have free will that there is nothing we can really, truly do to prevent them from choosing a questionable behavior.
