Does anyone know of any websites that I can get information about Lent? I'm specifically looking for things like what a Catholic needs to do during lent (fasts, prayers....). Thank you.

Google Catholic Lent you'll find a number of sites, Lent is one of my favourite seasons in the Christain year. I'm Anglican and I'm so thankful that we follow the church calendar. I don't think it's a matter of what you are suppose to do but what God leads you to do. I have given up things like coffee etc. but I find it more meaningful to resolve to take on a Bible study or spend more time in prayer and meditation. God bless you as you keep a holy Lent.

Personally(and as a church)my tradition is not to observe the Lenten season literally(Ash Wed Feb. 25/April 12, Easter Sunday)but to commemorate Christ Jesus' sacrifice and Victory(thus our privilege/responsibility) always and especially at this time of spring. I always wonder if one 'denies' something, coffee, chocolate or swearing(I know a woman that puts a nickel for every 'cuss' word in her 'cuss jar' as 'cute')shouldn't that be the norm rather then the exception for penance or obedience? You might find is site (http://www.americancatholic.org/Features/Lent/) helpful.

What I am most curious and unclear about are things like....I know I'm not suppose to eat meat on certain days (but what days?), I know I'm suppose to give some thing up for Lent (is it during all of lent or curtain weeks?). I've always been Catholic, but feel that I have re-found my faith and want to really participate in Lent this year, but I'm not sure where to go to find out what I should do or reflect upon during the season.
Thank you PP and LC for the help!

Well I grew up Catholic, and if I remember correctly, meat is not eaten on Fridays during lent. As for giving up something for lent, it is for the duration of lent, the whole 40 days.

I am not a practicing Catholic anymore, but this past year I did give up coffee which was harder than I thought it would be for those 40 days. Sounds trivial but it was hard for me to do.

I am a Catholic, actually contemplating leaving the Catholic faith, but I will be participating in Lent. Meat is not eaten on Ash Wednesday, on every Friday for the 40 days. Try to fast one meal that Friday prayfully. When giving something up, it can be pretty much anything material or it can be a vow to focus on some part of your spirituality more. You can participate in the stations of the cross. There are many other things Catholics focus on during lent that are also available on americancatholic.org.

I'm not sure about the meat on Friday and the giving up somethilng has to be something meaningful, not giving up eating liver when you never eat liver anyway. Giving up time from a hobby for Bible study would be a good example. Remember Sunday is always a feast day as that was the day Jesus was resurrected. The practice of Lent comes from the forty days our Lord spent in the wilderness. Talk to your priest, he will be able to explain and advise you. L Cannon, we believe in celebrating Jesus' sacrifice and victory all year too Lent gives let's us focus in a special way before the great celebration of Easter.

Perhaps the only 'difference'(admittedly slight)might be tone. I have the sense of the orthodox observance of Lent concentrates more(perhaps)on Jesus' cross(after all most orthodox traditions still have him on it throughout the year)while the 'evangelical' traditions have him freed from the his cross. That doesn't ignore his cross for we're constantly reminded he suffered, blood, died and was Victorious over His Cross.

Lexi,

I hope you give much prayer and consideration to the idea of leaving your faith. Lent is a wonderful way to put your faith in action.

I have been a Baptist for many years and am currently re-discovering the Catholic faith. Mainly for theological reasons of course. The celebration of Lent just adds to the beauty of a faith you can actively participate in. My Baptist friends and family doen't even mention it, much less understand why some Christians enjoy the season.

Anyway, I love the Baptist church and the folks there and am always praying we can be united some day as one universal church again.

Stay strong in your faith Lexi, enjoy Lent!

Forgive me for pointing out the obvious.

Why not go to a Catholic Church and ask what is their current ruling on fasting during Lent?

Because it is harder for me to set up a time to meet with my priest or others from my church as I work shift work (my shift and days off are always changing and I only know my schedule 1 - 2 weeks ahead of time) than it is for me to search it online (I have internet access and plenty of time at work).

I've searched the Vatican Website for you no less. They have pages and pages about fasting and lent - but I could not find a straight answer: i.e. when and how to fast.

My head aches - for Lent I'll not search their website again.

Dave- actually that's called the 'Days of Unleavened Bread' and it lasts for seven days leading up to Passover. I do love that feast. Getting all of the leavening out of our homes symbolizes getting sin out of our lives. It seems like no matter how much cleaning we do, I always find some leaven somewhere. Which is the real message of that feast- that we cannot remove sin from our lives by anything we do! It takes our Savior for that. Also- we must eat unleavened bread, which symbolizes bringing Christ into our lives. Thanks for bringing up the Passover!

Lent is a time of fasting, repentence, and almsgiving. One fasts on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting means abstaining from meat and skipping at least one meal, starting at midnight and ending the next midnight. People who may be excused from fasting are children under a certain age, I don't recall the exact age; people over 65, and those with health conditions like diabetes. During Lent, churches generally have special communal penance services so people can receive the sacrament of reconciliation (confession). In the past, the emphasis of lent was giving something up, like chocolate or smoking, but the emphasis now is more towards doing something positive, reading Scripture daily, volunteering in some charity, etc.

I believe for kids - it's under 16, quietly50. But other than that - you are right on!

And so is the rest of ya's!

Just some reflection 's of a former Catholic (now a Free Methodist)...........

When I was being raised in the Catholic faith (I'm aging myself! lol).......
1) At least weekly penance w/ the Preacher was the rule ........... "No Exceptions!"
It was much preferred that one do repentance at least daily during Lent
2) Daily Mass ........ Not Mandatory, but hey, couldn't hurt, eh? (Do they even do this any more?)
3) Stations of the Cross/Wednesday Night Mass, also not mandatory - but if you were (are) a "good" Catholic ..... you'd (you'll) go weekly.
4) Giving up - "Something" for Lent, wasn't an option, either.
5) A big, no-no ...... Eating meat on any of the - "Holy Days", of Lent - w/ the exception of Easter. And of course ........ Fridays.
6) Rosary Services

And I'm sure I am missing a few.

Irish2 ......... I have been a Baptist for many years and am currently re-discovering the Catholic faith.

I was Catholic from roughly 1961-1983(ish). Pretty-well much fell-out of all religions between about 1983-1994. Then ended up in the Free Methodist Church.

You'll notice I didn't say anything about - "Faith". The reason for that is (short version) ....... Because since about 2001 or so, I have come to believe that most, if not all - "Christian Churches", follow the same basic tenants of - "Faith". And really, it's ones own faith that really matters, in the end - and not some - "organized religion".

There are some theological difference's that will never cause me to back to the Catholic Church, which is just fine - and a completely different topic.

And one more thing ... it would be a good idea if you give up anything - e.g. chocolates, sweets, beer, etc ... you give the money you saved to charity.

Dave- actually that's called the 'Days of Unleavened Bread' and it lasts for seven days leading up to Passover.
I understand the 3 feasts that coincide here. The first day is Passover proper which starts at sundown on the 14th of Nissan. That is just after the final purging of leaven takes place (afternoon of the 14th). The 15th starts just after sundown and Passover is this entire day. That day and the next 6 days are the Feast of Unleavened Bread, Chag HaMatzot: Nissan 15-21. Also in there is Yom haBikkuirim, the feast of first fruits. Pharasaic counting puts this on 16 Nissan, the day after Pesach. Sadduceean counting puts this on the Sunday that falls in the feast of Unleavened bread. (biblically more correct IMO)

Lev 23:5 In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month in the evening, is the LORD’s Passover.
Lev 23:6 On the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread to the LORD. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread.

Lev 23:10 “Speak to the children of Israel, and tell them, ‘When you have come into the land which I give to you, and shall reap its the harvest, then you shall bring the sheaf of the first fruits of your harvest to the priest:
Lev 23:11 and he shall wave the sheaf before the LORD, to be accepted for you. On the next day after the Sabbath the priest shall wave it.
quote:

Thanks for bringing up the Passover!
You are welcome!

I absolutely agree, but He was a Jew.
Not trying to start and argument here....this is just why I didn't think Christians celebrated Passover. I also remember learning about the Holocaust and what the Jews did in the camps to keep Passover alive.
