onecoolmom -> How is the school year ending for everyone? (5/16/2009 8:39:23 PM)

We are trying to finish strong, it is so hard after Spring Break. Overall I would say that my two oldest have had a great year.

DD is "graduating" from 8th grade with almost straight A's, hs Algebra has been difficult. [;)] She is heading to the IB program with 2 out of 4 of he friends.

DS transitioned well into middle school even though the first semester was hard. He has finally gotten used to the responibility and work load of a middle school.

DD2 is doing great overall. Her school is not progressing the way we would like, so we are look for a new school. She is not challenged at all at this school.

It's going to end okay - or at least we are hoping it does!

Ty - eldest seems to be doing fine. We are hoping he gets a 3 or higher on his AP exam that he just took but we have to wait til sometime this summer to get those results. He has struggled at different times this year with different things but seems to be able to pull himself back up to passing grades every time.

Aryn - I hope ends on a good note! She should be able to enter middle school and the gifted program next year with decent grades this year. She too has struggled at different times but she is ending good! She's been published twice this school year with two different poems and that has really spurred her on in her writing! She has come a LONG way this year! She started the school year all worried and shy but has stepped out and taken so many risks and chances this year and has tried so many new things it's amazing!

Ethan has had a FANTASTIC year for the most part! And I give credit where credit is due. Having this particular 4th grade teacher at our school has given Ethan a great year! It was a great match! Now he's had issues this year - but this overall was a great year!

Zoe - she has had a great year too. But then again I don't think I have to worry about her at all, no matter what teacher she gets ever. She manages to get through just fine.

Blessings,

Garsy

Mine's just finishing Kindergarten in a few weeks! It's absolutely amazing how fast the school year has gone! He has done really great though and I'm excited because he's participating in a school play at the end of the month! Can't wait to see him on stage! [:)]

I am so glad to see this school year wind down! DS is finishing 1st grade having attended two schools in two states this year. He's doing much better than he was. His teacher even commented on his good choices on Friday. I am glad that we won't worry about summer school, but I worry a little that we did the right thing for him-- not that it was much of a choice... The whole "blood and turnip" problem.

My only regret as we approach the end of the year is that I wish we could have had a stronger finish to my new Moms in Touch group. We will only have met four times, but hopefully, God will keep the desire strong in the hearts of the other moms to continue into the next school year. We will be breaking over the summer, and I am kicking around an idea for a year opener in August.

danas_mom -> RE: How is the school year ending for everyone? (5/19/2009 12:15:15 PM)

We've had a really good year overall here. Dana (4th grade) always has a great time at school and was in Gifted and Talented this year. She really enjoyed that. Nathan (2nd grade) got in trouble a few times but overall I'm very proud of him. This is the first year that he hasn't constantly been in trouble the last couple of months of school. He's had a little trouble on the bus with older kids picking on him, but has been handling it pretty well. When it gets too bad, hubby has a chat with the bus driver and/or principal and that takes care of it for a few weeks.

But we are looking very forward to summer!!!

Here, here!!! We are going to put up the kid's pool this weekend! We're going to get one of those that is not professionally installed, but big enough for an adult to float around in. You know, I need to be in there for their safety! Yeah, that's the ticket! [:D]

debilyn -> RE: How is the school year ending for everyone? (5/21/2009 9:36:44 AM)

We're finishing strong this year. Last day of school is June 3rd. At the beginning of the year, we were going all week, last month they changed the schedule. [&:]

S made the top 10% for the freshman class. B is graduating with honors, and K will be involved in the gifted program next year in the third grade.

stampinlady -> RE: How is the school year ending for everyone? (5/21/2009 1:15:41 PM)

Dd will finish her freshman year in hs with B's and ds will finish jr hr with A's. He's been on the A honor roll all jr hi. A big change from the christian school. Dd transitioned wonderfully from the christian school to public hs, made some great friends and got involved in a few things. All in all it was a great school year.[:D]

I'm posting as a teacher, not a parent... my 8th graders will be taking an end-of-course exam in my class to verify that they get high school credit for taking Spanish in jr. high. I think they will [almost] all do well, which is impressive since I was out on maternity leave for 2 months and they didn't do much of anything while I was gone[;)] Most of my kiddos worked hard before and after my absence and handled the transitions well. I'm kind of excited to see how they score on the exam because I think we have a shot at outscoring most of the other schools in the district.

My 8th grade daughter is gearing up for this as well. Her test is a week from Monday, I am sure she will do fine. She did the oral exam earlier this week and scored a 95[:D]%.

4IMPersuaded -> RE: How is the school year ending for everyone? (5/23/2009 8:48:40 PM)

Good for her! I'll bet she'll be glad to get the written over with, huh?

PrincessDonna -> RE: How is the school year ending for everyone? (5/23/2009 9:44:55 PM)

We just started a new visitation schedule, which has Nick here every Wednesday after school and then we bring him back to school Thursday morning. We are all loving it!

Brian has a meeting with Nick's teacher in about 2 weeks. I have been informed that I may not attend because I am "not his biological parent". Apparently, his mother, who is herself completely uninvolved, told the teacher that she cannot discuss Nick with me there. What a...well, we won't go there. The stupid part is that in order to get there, Brian has to take pain meds because he just had back surgery...and his memory suffers when he is on that stuff. Maybe he should bring a recorder?

We are hoping that Nick will be held back this year. He is not doing well socially or academically. He has always been "younger" than he is. We'll see...but I'm not holding my breath. Everyone else seems content with him being at the bottom of the class.

garsyt -> RE: How is the school year ending for everyone? (5/23/2009 9:58:38 PM)

YES to the recorder!!!!! Use it Donna! Also make sure the teacher knows that TWO sets of notes from any of these meetings need to made - one for Brian and one for Nick's mom. I would also consider asking if a third party with no ties to Nick's Mom or you guys could attend this meeting to assist Brian, since he did just have back surgery, if nothing else to take notes. Maybe someone from the school even?

It is so sad to watch a kid flounder and fail, but still be pushed into academics and social situations he is NOT ready for. And the farther he gets before someone final says there was a problem, the worse it will be!

Okay - I'll get off my soapbox for the moment.

Blessings,

Garsy

Well, we're done for the year. Youngest ds had a very good year and has been promoted to the 8th grade and my middle ds is now a University senior. Time has just been flying by!!

I didn't understand when people used to tell me that time accelerates as you get older! I do now!

Kath -> RE: How is the school year ending for everyone? (5/25/2009 5:56:32 PM)

End of year here. Linz's last day was May 20 but we don't have a report card yet. Mike graduated from High School and will attend community college next fall. We are registering him for classes on May 28. My oldest is home visiting as his last day at college was May 14. He'll go back for summer classes though.

PrincessDonna -> RE: How is the school year ending for everyone? (5/25/2009 6:16:57 PM)

I can't fathom schools being out already. Nick's last day is June 25th. His entire last week is half-days though...how dumb is that?[8|]

Kath -> RE: How is the school year ending for everyone? (5/25/2009 8:57:44 PM)

I would seriously hate that. Thing of the waste in gas. [&:]

garsyt -> RE: How is the school year ending for everyone? (5/26/2009 9:33:23 AM)

I agree Kath! Around here that would be a serious waste!

What is most irritating around here is when the high schoolers have a half day but the middle and elementaries have full days. The buses run their normal morning routes, one for the middle and high schoolers and then an hour and a half later for the elementary kids. Then they run THREE routes in the PM. One at 11:30 am for the high schoolers (half way mark for them) then one at 2:30 for the middle schoolers and then at 3:30 for the little guys. It makes no sense to me especially when they continue to complain about the price of fuel! But then again I can see why they do it. We just simply don't have enough buses in our district to transport both the middle schoolers and the elementary kids at the same time. Some buses are packed to the max already just from the elementary kids.

Anyway. Aryn had her final student council meeting this morning. YEA!

Blessings,

Garsy

kernsfamily -> RE: How is the school year ending for everyone? (5/28/2009 4:06:08 PM)

We're wrapping up the school year on june 4th.

Our 3rd grader's teacher is having a baby over the summer, so the families got together and held a baby shower for her last week. (it's her FIRST kid!)
The school's music teacher had the "choir program" for all the kids of the school last friday. (the music teacher at school is in choir at our church, and teaches in children's choir at church for the 4 year olds).

The kids had such a great year....they especially learned alot of "extras" (since 2 of the teachers spent all last summer on a mission trip to China)....their teachers worked in ALOT of "material" from their experiences last summer.

Then, we're leaving for vacation on the 6th.

We're going to my sister's new house in Kansas City for a few days (they just had a corporate relocation to there from High Point, NC). Then, 3 full days in St. Louis to take the kids to the Gateway Riverfront Arch, as well as Grant's Farm, Purina Farms (and perhaps a few other places, depending on time and how the kids are doing).....and, then to my inlaws in Northern Arkansas. On the 15th, I fly home, and my wife & kids will stay up in Arkansas until sometime in early July. (it's the 5th annual "summer camp" at Granny & GrandDaddy's)... And, our soon-to-be 9 year old is going to stay up there even after that, until probably the first weekend of August.

And, it starts all over again sometime around the 24th of August....i think....

garsyt -> RE: How is the school year ending for everyone? (5/28/2009 5:57:07 PM)

6 days left! 8 if you are counting the weekend. - Not that my kids are counting or anything!

Then only 81 days til they're all back in school! Ha! Not that I'm counting or anything! Honestly I don't think I'll get too much time to even breath this summer. It's so booked already! Before I know it it will be over and I'll be wondering what happened to it!

Blessings,

Garsy

We're dooooooone! *much singing and dancing*

Dana won a bicycle today for her AR scores. It's the second one she's won, she didn't get to keep the first one though (in 2nd grade) because it was too small and we had just bought her a new bike the day before anyway. [:D] It went to the church Christmas party.

She wasn't expecting this one, a boy in her class had almost twice as many points as she (over 450) but he won the overall score so he got a bike for that and they gave the grade win to her.

And we didn't have to bribe Nathan the last few weeks! This is the first year he's made it without being in trouble almost every day. Major victory! I'm proud of both of my kiddos.

And next year Jacob will start kindy and I won't have any more babies left at home with me. [8D]

I would just like to announce that ALL of my 8th graders passed their EOC [:)] I've never had 100% passing before...
