ORIGINAL: terrie I attended my son's 5th grade graduation program and was sick to my stomach afterwards. Never ONCE did they commend any students for GRADES. Maybe a 1/3 of the time was spent on reading awards and something they call a Citizen award which is given to students who they feel showed great character. I can understand the reading awards no problem - that's school! The Citizen award was ok, maybe I can get that one. But, then 1/3 of the time was spent giving out GYM awards. Who cares how many push-ups a kid can do? What does that have to do at all with moving on to 6th grade? Who cares how fast a kid can run the "shuttle" run? Who cares how many chin-ups a kid can do? Who cares how fast a kid can run a mile? Who cares how many sit-ups a kid can do? Give these awards out during gym, not during a graduation ceremony! Then, the last 1/3 of the time was spent on a program called DARE. It's about keeping kids off drugs. Good program, just don't see what it has to do with 5th Grade Graduation! And, the police officer who ran the DARE program gave out awards too. He even gave out an award to the kid who he felt wrote the best essay about DARE. Give me a break! Is this guy a teacher? Does he know anything about essays? Did he even know how to spell check it? Was the grammar correct? I'm not saying he's stupid, but if he was equipped to evalute an essay then what are his qualifications? I'm sorry, but I saw almost the entire program as yet another attempt to reward mediocrity. Almost all of those kids who got awards would never have gotten anything if the graduation would've been like a normal high school graduation that is based on GRADES. But instead, the kids who got good grades never even received an acknowledgement! Nothing about honor roll or anything. What is going on here? Is everyone so afraid of hurting kid's feelings who don't get good grades in school so they come up with all kinds of meaningless awards to hand out to them? Fine, give them the awards, but not during a graduation ceremony. Gym and DARE have nothing to do with graduating to the next grade. If they are going to hand out awards like these, then don't have a ceremony at all. What a slap in the face to the kids who work hard in school and get good grades. And, yes my son is one of the good grades kids. But, even still trying to look at a graduation ceremony from a common sense point of view, it still didn't make any sense to hand out gym and DARE awards. Sorry, just needing to vent. I really think I'm going to write a letter to the school. I'm sure it won't do any good, but this is incredible. I definitely think you are overreacting. Maybe the things that the children were rewarded for were unimportant to you, but I'll bet they were important to the children receiving those awards. I am amazed that your school has a fifth grade graduation. Does every grade level "graduate" every year? I am a teacher, and some children do not excel in academics. Sometimes it is because of a lack of effort, and sometimes it is not. I would never leave a child out on awards day. I won't give him/her an academic award if it is not deserved/earned, but I will give a character award recognizing something special about that child. It is never a bad thing to try to reward positive character traits.
