Congrats to Zoe's daughter and yay to Garsy's daughter's scholarship! We're back in town after our church mission trip and family reunion. We enjoyed both. I wanted to sleep in today, but had to get to work this morning. We had to rescan all our stations on the box when we got back yesterday. We gained a channel I didn't even know existed, but lost our local Fox affiliate and ABC - well, we didn't completely lose ABC, but it comes and goes so often, we might as well have lost it. We enjoy PBS, and now we have our "state only" programming, which has state historical info (which is great for my son and I, the history buffs). We'll play with the antenna a few more times and rescan, but we'll deal with whatever we get because we're not ready to buy satellite yet. (The cable company keeps expanding around us, but never in our immediate area.)

Quite honestly we don't want cable either. I don't WANT my kids watching too much TV and if we had the number of channels available on cable or satellite, they'd be watching TV all the time! Even with the cheapest packages! Well there were 6 girls from Zoe's troop including her at this day camp! And several other girls she knows as well! But only one is in her camp group! So she gets to make a bunch of new friends!! The others from her troop are divided between to camp groups, mostly because they are all in the same carpool group. I guess she had a good time but didn't like the lunch they were served. Ah well better luck with that tomorrow. Blessings, Garsy

Yeah for grades and scholarships. DeeDee has been looking at scout camps and has decided to pass on a 'nature' themed camp to go to a CSI camp.... is great to hear that you are interested in CSI Camp. I can't give you an exact outline because we strive to have all girls participating create the schedule but it will go something like this: Sunday-arrival, swim test, program planning, dinner, fire Monday-AM-Coroner is coming in to give a presentation on forensic science (this would only fall through if there was a major trauma accident in which they would cancel); PM-the group is split in half. One group will set up a crime scene and the group will investigate the scene to see if they can solve it and vice versa. Swimming later on Tuesday- climbing tower, more csi and departure. She is also interested in a horse camp, a science camp and my favorite - ethnic food camp. Each meal is ethnic foods. I think this could be a fun weekend. Think about the food and add some crafts that relate to the areas. Tell them there is PB&J and cereal if they need it to round out their meal and just have a blast. I could plan that one...

It can't be called spam...it is morning now... So, the CSI camp that she wants to go to? I told PBee he had to say yes at the word coroner (he was worried it was something lame since it is 4th-8th grade). He agreed. Anyhow, this is the 2-hour away camp that I wanted to send her to 3 months ago. Which reminds me, I need to update the sons emergency contact information.

Sounds like whatever camp was chosen that she would have had a good time! That CSI camp must be a popular theme as our council camp is having one too. Aryn would have loved the ethnic food camp! So is Pbee okay with her going 2 hours away now? Tomorrow is the overnight event for Zoe's day camp. Hopefully they won't have to deal with too much rain, but it's supposed to be off and on rain all day tomorrow as well as the rest of the week. Blessings, Garsy

He is better with it...not great. I think I would like to do the ethnic food one myself. Run it, I mean. I like the theme and it would work well for a youth group or school reward / after school program. I know our Boys and Girls club did it, but they counted pizza as an Italian food and they had $0 budget, so they didn't do much. If you could have $20 per child for food, I think you could do 4 meals and snack with American food for breakfast (so they had a decent meal to start the day) Now, Poppa is fussing about Baltimore. He is going for training for a week and will be in class from 8-4. DeeDee and I are going with him and we are going to sightsee. We were showing him things and asking about the budget and he was sighing about how he 'didn't really want to see that.' I feel bad but we don't go anywhere until 6pm when you figure supper and things close at 8 or 9. It doesn't seem right to ask her to sit in a room all day, to go for 3 hours. He wouldn't see it if we didn't go, so I won't feel too bad. The national aquarium is there, so is a science center. We have a good one here, but it is up DeeDee's alley. And a MALL! We could do that every day. I added up what we would want to do and admission wise, we are looking at $100, plus food. She and I eat light, so we will be fine. But, he insists that we see the constitution and it is open 10 - 5.

I have to clarify USS Constitution, not the paper Constitution. He said he wants to see a ship that is as old as he is. He can't see it. I mentioned going early enough to see it Sunday and he nixed that idea. He wants to go home thru Harpers Ferry and visit Antetem again, so we really can't wait until after noon to leave Baltimore. He said he will be there again, so don't worry about it.

It is the USS Constellation that is there. I was wrong. The USS Constitution is in Boston and has also been mentioned at the house as a destination. (see second paragraph of my disertation below) It is just as old and looks similar in design. I like big things, noisy things, awesome, overwhelming things. . . Thunderstorms, waterfalls, trains, factories (oh, to see a glass plant, the heat and noise and leirs and shuffling boxes...) airplanes roaring overhead, fireworks and building demolition. . . History stuff is neat too. I don't always retain dates and facts, but I enjoy the moment. The emotion behind the events. The planning and intrigue that made it all come together. Looking at the uniforms and realizing the young men who wore them were the size of my DeeDee - WOW, it tugs at you in a way that words don't. So, a ship that old, next to one that was at Pearl Harbor? I wouldn't plan a trip just to visit them, but there is no way I'd miss a chance to see them. I want to do the Edgar Allen Poe stuff and she said NO WAY. If I had my way, we'd go home thru Philly and see the Liberty Bell, maybe some other time. That is why the air show was great last year. Poppa was pointing and spouting out facts that no one cared about (think Data on Star Trek) and I was sitting there asking if it was coming back. Which one? The red one. And grinned like a fool. We stopped at the waterfalls and I just stood and cried, watching the water, unable to believe I could just walk up to it. Stupid, I know. I even like my job, the train coming through the plant, the heaters that melt salt that I can look down into, but only if I stand on the piece of wood because the metal is hot enough to melt my boots. How these tanks are buried, and a different one has ice around the piping, even in summer (nitrogen). How the coolers cool things and what happens with the left over water that steams out of the product (we use it to run the plant, it is already steaming so it is part of how things are heated) The 'paper' Consitution is in the National Archives. I'd like to go there too. As far as Poppa visiting things, there is a free lighthouse, it is $5 to climb an observation tower and I think we can get into the zoo at a discount (with our Erie Zoo membership) so it is all good. I will just feel guilty. Thank you to all my ancestors who taught me if you are enjoying something, it must be a sin.

I'd say yes, but I am biased. The sheen that Poppa has comes from the sparkle in his hair... Oh, to see the Grand Canyon and to jump out of an airplane and to on another train trip... I'm not getting things done because I am thinking of things to do. And, I do feel guilty about BigBee not going.

Momma... We enjoyed a visit to Ft. McHenry the last time we were in Baltimore (and it was a cold winter day): http://www.nps.gov/fomc/

Oh...is the National Aquarium on the free AZA list? We went there a very long time ago and I remember it being an expensive ticket...and we should have been on AZA then.

It isn't, but the zoo is. I can get a ticket that allows you into 5 attractions in 4 days for the same cost as the science center, aquarium and observation deck. At that point, I haven't saved any money (same amount as admission), but we can go to 2 more places for 'free'. There is another package that does the history sites so I need to look at regular admission, verses packages. I hate to get locked into a plan and get there and change our minds. DeeDee just told me last week that she would like to use public transit so she knew she could and we talked about parking at the mall and using the bus to go downtown (in our area). Lo-and-behold. It is $1.60 and 20 minutes from the hotel to Ft McHenry, where she would get in for free. Did you do the Jr Ranger thing there? She is getting a bit old for some of the programs.

I'm envious M-bee. I love historical places. My son and I could take a trip around the US and visit all the historical sites and see things like Mt Rushmore, Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, etc. My husband and girls would enjoy it, but not in the same way. B and I talk about the history behind what we see, the others just see whatever it is as a historical object to look at. I hope you have a great trip. I agree that the CSI camp sounds interesting. We have a science summer program at the public school that is doing something similar this year. Unfortunately, my kids don't qualify - they're either too old or too young.

Unfortunately, my kids don't qualify - they're either too old or too young. I know that feeling too! There are arts programs offered through our community arts academy this summer, but all the ones Aryn is interested in - she's either to old for or two young for. There is one class in 3-D art that is offered for her age group, and a Manga drawing class as well but she is not interested in either of those classes. She'd much rather take their poetry writing workshop with one of the college professors that Brian knows or a photography class or even a beginning pottery class, but they are all offered only to kids going into 7th grade through 12th grade. Ah well there's always next year. Blessings, Garsy

Moultrie is an interesting fort to visit. Ft. Delaware (I think that is the name) is also a good visit. I am not sure of the name of the Delaware town where it is located.

BTW, we noticed the county put up a new sign on the main road. It read "DEER CROSSING NEXT 14 MILES". Ha too funny!! We got one of those recently too. Only after the high school bus nearly hit a deer one morning right after it left our little town! Zoe's spending the night at the girl scout camp. We went for the parent program tonight. It was pretty simple as most of these programs are, but expected. We had quite a time getting there tho! It was at the last minute held at a nearby church because of the threat of bad weather, so they left a sign on the front gate directing parents to the church, but Brian just dropped me off and before I could get his attention to come back and get me he was off. headed to the gas station to get a pop. AND he had my cell in the car or I would have called him right away. So I walk up to the corner by a restaurant where I knew he would come by eventually to get back to the camp area. While helping an elderly woman out of her car after she slipped, I saw him pass by! OBLIVIOUS to my waving to get his attention! On his way to the camp area! So I'll catch him on his way back. NOPE! Drove RIGHT by me again! So I start to walk down to the church where the girls are, not exactly knowing how far down the road it is. I pass the little public library and ask if I can use the phone and call Brian's cell to come back and get me! He was already at the church, but high-tailed it back to get me! Of all days to leave my cell in the car! After the program we went back to the camp site where the high school campers helped the younger girls build their campfires in their units. It was really neat to see the older girls interact with the younger ones! Not something you see everyday! Then the girls roasted marshmallows and made their parents and themselves s'mores! Then the parents left and the girls I suppose were going to be getting ready for bed! Tomorrow I just have to remember to go pick her up at 4. Friday, night Aryn is going to go spend the night at a friends house! She is pretty excited about this as it is something she doesn't typically get to do. We do not live in the same neighborhoods or areas as a lot of her friends and a lot of her friends parents "claim" and sometimes don't know us all that well and are thus would rather not have their girls stay here, but are okay with Aryn staying at their homes. I must be one lenient, trusting parent! It seems I'm always the one letting my kids stay somewhere else even though I barely know the kids parents. I know the kids rather well from working with them in school so much and I tend to trust my kids's judgment when it comes to their friends. If the kids are relatively "normal" and I like them, I can pretty much assume the parents are going to be okay too. So I take my kids to their friends homes and talk with the parents and leave my kids. Okay I don't know if any of that made since as I'm typing with my eyes half closed! Good night! Blessings, Garsy

Garsy - I always figure you can tell more about parents by how their kids act than by how the adults act when you are around. Well, I can tell which scout parents have no respect for me by how their kids don't listen to me and interrupt all the time...

I like that, Kylie. We occasionally have "cow crossing" signs in our rural area. We have an area near a curve where many deer cross. The sign is past the curve because signs have to be placed so far from a curve or something. (The road begins too close to the curve.) I think it's sad, and kinda funny, that the sign is past the area. Though it's far enough in the "backroads" that, so far, there have been no problems.
