Our high school is somewhere around 1330. Near the top is much better, though.

My high school is not on the list either. The high school Ty attends is one of 7 Indiana schools that are on the list and the only one from NE Indiana! We are in the 1090's so not near the top, but not near the bottom either! A lot of it is based on AP or IB testing or enrollment or maybe it's both. I don't remember, but the link does tell you! Blessings, Garsy

There isn't a school near us. Well closer than an hour away. But, if you go to the interactive tab, and zoom in on Pennsylvania, then hover over individual schools the Pittsburgh area (darker spot in the south western quadrant) you will learn that both Pittsburgh and Beaver Falls are in Rhode Island. I find this humorous in an article about quality schools. I do think it is great that y'all make the list.

We have a weird thing where there are 5 huge high schools very close to us, and 3 of them are all within 5 minutes of each other. One school was in the top 100, the other 4 were near the bottom. It's still good to make the list, but I was surprised at the disparity. One of the 5 is almost like two separate schools, one school for the "gifted" kids and one for the regular kids. The regular kids school is rather poor, I'm told, but the gifted school is quite something.

I thought that looking at the Erie school. It sounds like a private school that has admission standards. In other words, the students are more likely to do well. This was a problem with the PSSA's here in PA. I don't remember if there was a number or a percentage, but we have 40 kids in the elementary school who qualify for modified education plans (IEP, Special Ed, Title I???something like that). This makes that group of kids their own 'school' within our school. As their own school, they are required to have students that are 'above basic' in there test results. If they were above basic, they wouldn't qualify for the help. I don't believe our school encourages the kids to take their AP tests, and we don't have an IB program.

No doubt you still have to do your homework when considering a school district! I've found that the best people to talk to about schools are parents of same aged kids or those slightly older then yours already in that district! The place to meet those parents? Churches, parks, swimming pools, or doing like minded activities! Sometimes even the grocery store. BUT make sure you never take just one persons opinion! Get several opinions. GO to district open houses or whatever events where you can see things AND meet parents. We have a district in the area that has an education fair every spring that features ALL the schools in that district both private and public, magnet and otherwise. Parents get to mingle with other parents and check out information from all the schools K through 12. IF we had stayed in that district this would have been highly beneficial to us as this was also where we got information regarding waiting lists for the magnet schools and charter schools and it was so easy to compare schools when they were all in the same location. But again - NOTHING beats talking to actual parents of kids in that district! Blessings, Garsy

I just saw that the top 2 schools are here in our general area of Dallas. One thing that REALLY skews the rankings...is that BOTH of those "schools" are "magnet schools".....and, not a "traditional school"....you have to "test in" and be "accepted" into those schools. It's not like a traditional school where it's "come one, come all" thing....and, having to put up with the "typical mix" of students.....these are schools consisting of ONLY the highest performing students from throughout the entire district....thus, that's why they can be ranked so high. because, overall, with perhaps a few exceptions, the Dallas School District is dismal.

Not my school, since I teach jr. high, but all four high schools in my district made the list of the top 1,500 public schools in the US Just thought I'd share.. The highschool my kids would have gone to is on the list. The one they do go to isn't but it's very small, Linz only has 80 in her graduating class. Sometimes I wish we would have stayed in Omaha.
