. “In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood... Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons...” “but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness.” Hebrews 12: 4-10 NIV Copyright © 1973, 1978, 1984 by International Bible Society It was a busy autumn afternoon. I had just left my daughter’s dance class with my three children, grabbed the pizza for dinner and was on my way home to start homework, and the rest of our school night routine. I saw the police car parked on the side of the road as I confidently drove by, going just under the speed limit. Imagine my surprise when he pulled out after me with his lights flashing! Excuse me?! I definitely was not speeding! I pulled over whispering a prayer inside “please God, I do not have time … he must be just going by...what??!!” My face became red and hot as I reached for my license and registration. As the officer walked up to my car, my son rolled the window down and exclaimed, “Whatever is wrong with the car- my daddy can fix it! He can fix anything!” The littlest one chimed in, “Are you going to use those hamcuffs on my mommy?” (Yes, he said HAMcuffs.) This was especially ironic as I was feeling exceptionally fat that day! Just to “put the icing on the cake” and make this whole embarrassing experience take even longer, my daughter proudly informed him that even her dolly is properly fastened in a car seat. As it turned out, I had forgotten to renew my registration. Apparently in our state, your vehicle must be towed and you cannot drive it anywhere until the registration fee is paid. This meant we would now be having an “out-of-vehicle experience.” The kids got to get out and TOUCH the police car, great! The officer even entertained them by using his lights and siren as we stood on the side of the road (just to be sure all of the neighbors would be watching out their window)! My husband came to our rescue and we followed the tow truck to the tow lot. We paid the registration fee online, paid the towing fee (ludicrous!) and drove home with our very cold pizza and a few more memories. So, why do these things happen? Why did I need to be made a complete spectacle of in front of my three kids and all of the neighbors on that street? Well, the simple truth is, I had not obeyed the rules. Accidentally or not, the registration was not up-to-date. I could have been pulled over when I was alone (much less complicated Lord), but I wasn’t. I wasn’t because the Lord felt it was important for my children to see that we all must follow the rules. There are always consequences when we don’t. They may be seen or unseen but there are always consequences. In the word, God reminds us that there are times when we must receive correction. Just as I correct my children when they disobey, we are corrected in love by our heavenly Father. It is sometimes done discretely and sometimes the Lord will show others through the example of our repentance. Hebrews 12:11 reminds us “No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.” Do not be bitter and don’t resist his correction. Let the Lord produce a harvest of righteousness in you.

Cool story! God does discipline His sons and daughters. I often wish He didn't. I especially hate being disciplined by "worldly authority," though. My experiences with nonsense in government authority has seriously jaded my impression of law enforcement. It certainly wasn't very friendly or considerate to force you to have your car towed at your own expense on top of other late fees and penalties. Oh well, government employees that I know are not in the business of making friends, though. I used to work for the NPS, and I got seriously annoyed at the rangers giving tickets to people on vacation away from hassles of everyday life. Take your kids to a National Park for a break and get a ticket for picking a flower or feeding a squirrel..... Man that irks me! Blessings, Rusty
