I was using one to put music on my netbook. I went away for a few hours and when I came back, the light indicator was blinking red. I took out the CD and put another in, but it didn't do anything, so I checked to see what it does when it takes a new CD. The drawer closes and the green indicator light on the front starts flashing, sometimes sporadically. Then after a few seconds, you can hear a very faint little hiccup in there and it blinks red. I can see the CD spinning at maybe 2 revs per second, and it slows down until it stops at the tiny hiccup noise.

It is recognized by my computer and used to work. Drivers seem to be a non-issue in this case. I've tried tapping it a little with no CD inside and unplugging it from power and the computer for a few minutes. It doesn't seem to want to work. I have tried using it with a different computer. I cannot find any good documentation on it online. It seems to be really old and slow. Any ideas?

The 8200 series is 10 years old. Could be the drive simply died (finally). It happens. Only other thing you might want to check is whether it can read a known-good (already-burned) CD, and then if so, make sure you're not using junk blank media to record on.

Was going to say that, but did not want to be the harbinger of gloom and doom. I guess that Win2K era drive just gave up the ghost so to speak.

Ok, so I think I may have isolated the problem. Anyone with electrical experience or soldering expertise would probably be helpful.

Connected to part of the reader laser is a tiny little soldered connecting wire which is maybe 3 mm x 5 mm and rather flat. It comes out of a larger portion of itself, only to be not connected to anything. When I push it down, it curls back on top of itself like folding the very corner of a piece of paper only it isn't shaped like a corner, it's a square projection. There are three little bits of solder or connection or something on the end of the wire, and there are two little bits where it looks like the wire might go. It looks like the wire folds back onto itself and was soldered to the two little connecting points. When I fold the wire down onto itself which seemingly connects it to where it is supposed to go, the drive door closes and it tries to read the cd. (These are music CD's that I've been talking about btw)

The problem is, as soon as I let go of the wire, it pops back out into mid air and is not connected to anything again. I can take pictures and video and show people who are interested, just pm me with your email or something. Should I just try to solder it back into place?

Your cost of a CD/DVD RW ≈ $75. Saw hp cd-writer 8200 on e-bay for $10 + S&H.

Your cost of repairing, material, time and effort will be way more than just picking up a new one.

Unless of course, you are just enjoying the experimentation.

And not every wire gets soldered or even terminated. Some are purposely left unattached. So be sure that dangling wire is supposed to connect to something before you do anything.

Yep. Dangling wires are inversely proportional to the device version. [:D]
