Do you have an app for slave labor? Do you use an iPod, or iPhone? Have you ever gotten a Dell? How about Motorola or Nokia? If so, you’re probably contributing, perhaps inadvertently, to the vicious labor cycle inherent in Asian electronic supply chains — a notoriously secretive industry awash in alleged human rights violations, a free-market exercise, endorsed by some of the world’s largest corporations, which blurs the lines of human slavery. Want to know what's really crazy? Some of the worst factories in mainland China that deal with electronics are ran by Taiwanese firms.

My wife has always said I was a slave to my iPhone. Now we know she was right. BT.

I think the lesson to be learned from this is that if you have a problem with your work environment, you should improve your skillset and make yourself more valuable to your employer so that you have some leverage to improve your condition. -Dan.

Sadly, most of our manufactured goods fall into this category. Worse yet, it's the only way to make them at prices Americans/the Western World want to pay.

I think this is similar to Walmart clothes (some of them). I remember someone saying how they didn't care where the clothes came from, but will always continue to buy them even if they came from terrible labor conditions because they are cheap and they have kids (that need clothes).

And there doesn't seem like there is anything that we can do about it either.

Exactly what I would expect of Mystery Babylon. Revelation 18:13 And cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots, and slaves, and souls of men. I dropped my cell phone four years ago when I retired from the limousine service.

The only thing we care about here in the states are what our dividends are on our stocks, and saving a buck at the store. But I do not own any stocks at all, but if I did say in a 401K plan, is there anything that we could really do with that as well?

Please give your defination fo "Salve labor"? Thanks RC Slave labor as defined in the article. If I had a choice, I would avoid buying from companies that did this practice.

The thing is, it goes much further than buying name brand pre-built. In many cases, it's even the components that are problems. Improving one's skill set is a red herring. Ask any IT worker about what happened in the aftermath of the IT Boom/Bust. There were lots of American IT workers with current skill sets ready and willing to work, but no American companies would hire us. American employers were bringing in people with H-1B visas or outsourcing IT jobs to foreign lands. Similar scenarios are playing out in many aspects of medicine - it's not our skills that are the problem, it's that we want, (perhaps more importantly know) and expect proper local prevailing wages and adherence to employment/labor laws. The quest the employers have in mind is cheap labor in the cheapest possible work place - lower wages, no union(s) and few to no employment laws make employer costs cheaper even if they're able to find (and require) the same skill sets as they'd been requiring of American workers.

Yeah, I remember a good friend of mine back in 2004 who had been laid off really relenting on the fact that jobs were going to people overseas. It was very rare form for him as he is generally a very cheerful person.

I have an Ipod made by slave labor, i watch Disney that also dabbles in porn, i use ATT that supports abortion, i work for a company that gives benefits to gays etc etc. You cannot buy from, work with, patronize, or otherwise have contact with anything that will not bring you into contact with that which you find abhorrent. Welcome to the machine.

But we can try, and we can make an attempt to build awareness of where things come. Big box stores are often selling cheap merchandise from overseas. Buying American is a start, whenever possible. Components are still usually made overseas, but it's a start. Not always shopping for the cheapest, if we're aware of where the cheapest comes from. Keep pushing for legislation and other avenues of encouragement for companies to conduct themselves ethically.
