"Give beer to those who are perishing, wine to those who are in anguish; let them drink and forget their poverty and remember their misery no more."

The "tavern" was inspired by this thread, and the karaoke bit brought to mind a couple of things, primarily:

Bein' a fool, in public, whether for Christ or Journey, this is the thread to do it. Standing up on the metaphorical stage without fear of reprimand or derision (unless you really, really deserve it).

Do you skip reading threads because the title makes you go ?

Do you not bother posting in threads because you feel like you'd be "the only one?"

How many times has your faith been questioned as a result of something you posted?

Do you ever tell yourself, "No more, I can't put up with these people..." only to find yourself perusing the forums once again?

Or, in the words of a fellow CW'r, this thread's statement of purpose:

1) to foster an atmosphere of intelligent discourse...repeat, INTELLIGENT discourse

2) to foster the idea that ALL people should be educated, not just SOME people with extra parts

3) to foster the idea that God gave us brains so that we would use them--that means you

4) to suppress the idea that you need to ask fellow xians on a message board if "this is okay to do"

5) to prohibit the discussion of contemporary xian music, or anything involving jaci velasquez

6) to foster the idea of spiritual nudism--i.e. no headcoverings, no dresses only, no long hair only, no other "onlys"

7) to foster the discussion of the bible without bringing the masoretic texts into it

8) to give xian singles a place to meet, free of the socially-inept

9) to give xians a safe place to post when they're drunk"

Now, as you can see, there are basically two prerequisites: intelligence and a sense of humour.

And by sense of humour I mean acerbic wit - the kind you wish there was a font for, so people wouldn't run crying when you comment.

Discuss the latest or thread topic. Tell a joke. Recommend a book. So on and so forth.

What? You still want alliteration? Fine. Welcome to Miasma's Melange of Motley Miscreants.

Discuss.

I sat here a full minute wondering what kind of being a "xian" is.

I guess I only meet the second of the prerequisites.

So, I'd been wanting to start one of these for a while, now, so the more like-minded of us around here could get to know each other - and, I could get some other people to join in, who've deemed CW too...stodgy and "white."

"Sexually abusing a teenager is a less serious crime if the girl is not a virgin, Italy's highest court said in a ruling. The court ruled in favor of a man who forced his 14-year-old stepdaughter to have oral sex with him and appealed a prison sentence of 40 months, arguing that the fact that the girl had had sex with other men should have been taken into consideration at his trial as a mitigating factor. The court agreed, saying that because of the victim's previous sexual experiences, her "personality, from a sexual point of view," was more developed and that therefore the damage to her was less than if she had been a virgin. The decision, which drew a barrage of criticism, opened the way for the stepfather to get a lighter sentence."

Rather infuriating, no?

I also read about the guy in Iowa - ladies, we can gripe and moan all we want about a shortage of "cool" Christian men to marry, but didja read about the guy who made his wife sign a contract? It dictated how she was to deal with her body hair (not have any - coincidence, he's in trouble for child pornography? I think not.), what she was not allowed to sleep in, and my favourite, the rules of his "My Time" - and that was just page one out of four. Complying with the contract means you can earn "Good behaviour days," which gets you out of the other three pages of rules.

Oh, and I don't meant to get the thread going in a serious, "feminist" (*gasp*) tone, that was just on my mind today.

So was Interpol's videos, why my wireless won't stay connected, how good sushi is, and how fat my cat is.

Ha, yeah, "Euty," I think you've got both covered .

It's ok to use "Xian," here (and, if you don't think so, well, perhaps another thread is for you - or start your own. Or read this one.)

Great thread, Miasma! You're my kinda gal!

"Bein' a fool, in public, whether for Christ or Journey, this is the thread to do it. Standing up on the metaphorical stage without fear of reprimand or derision (unless you really, really deserve it)."

And what exactly would I have to do to really, really deserve it?

"Do you skip reading threads because the title makes you go ?"

Yes, I just backed out of one in "Relationships" for that very reason!

"Do you not bother posting in threads because you feel like you'd be "the only one?"

No, this only spurs me on!

"How many times has your faith been questioned as a result of something you posted?"

Not my faith as much as my sanity!

"Do you ever tell yourself, "No more, I can't put up with these people..." only to find yourself perusing the forums once again?"

Yup! But after a jog around the block and an ice bath, I'm back again for more!

(It took me a half hour to type this...I still can't figure out how to quote just parts of a post!)

Hm...to really, really deserve, you'd probably have to talk about nothing other than how badly you want to a)get married b)have a baby c)the color pink.

To quote stuff, you go like this:

quote:

Here's the bit you want to quote

Me, I tend to use "quotation marks," because it's quicker. Depends on how much there is to quote.

I still kinda miss the ol' CW sidebar and maroon style, as I call it.

I've been posting on CW for about five years, I think. I was at a relative's house for Christmas, and CW was their homepage. I was bored (they don't even own a TV!), and so it began...it's my only interaction (aside from family) with Christians. Sometimes it makes me wish I was still involved, sometimes it reminds me why I stopped going to church. Either way, it makes me think.

D'oh! My quote instructions didn't help a'tall.

Ok, so, if you want to quote something you sandwich it inbetween

quote:

and

Though, I have a feeling that will just do it, so I'll type it with spaces in-between the letters:

[ q u o t e] the word or phrase you want to copy [ / q u o t e]

I'm just now learnin' all this new-fangled html and stuff...man, I wish I'd known back in the day how prolific computers, and codes and the internet would become...I wouldn't have spent so much time with them books of mine.

Thanks for the instruction on the quoting thing.... no matter how or what I do, it never works.

I had never communicated on line in my life before CW. I thought that people who did either had too much time on their hands or they were koo-koo. I used to use CW for the Bible tools and one day I clicked on the forums page and the rest is history. It is so addicting.

What...thought? Past tense??

I just did it for something to pass the time at work...but then I got all friendly with people and stuff. Turns out, there's other single women who are OK with it. Other - well, ok, one other - people who like the same music I do. Who aren't scared of asking questions...too bad they don't live around here.

Oh, and another way to use the quotey thingy, highlight the words/phrase, hit control C, and then use post reply instead of fast reply. The reply box will pop up with the bit you had highlighted quoted for you.

yes! and there are a few I wish I didn't have to read!

quote:

Do you not bother posting in threads because you feel like you'd be "the only one?"

not really, but you would not believe how many times I have written out a post just to click the X and not post it because I don't think anyone would think I have anything to contribute.

quote:

How many times has your faith been questioned as a result of something you posted?

No, but I was called a communist once for an edit I made. I still get a kick out of that! (I've been called some pretty foul names too, but I ignore it, I look at the source)

quote:

Do you ever tell yourself, "No more, I can't put up with these people..." only to find yourself perusing the forums once again?

No, I guess I'm addicted. Sometimes I get discouraged and don't want to post.

quote:

5) to prohibit the discussion of contemporary xian music, or anything involving jaci velasquez

quote:

7) to foster the discussion of the bible without bringing the masoretic texts into it

If I even knew what that meant I'd be careful not to do it!

quote:

8) to give xian singles a place to meet, free of the socially-inept

ummm, you didn't tell me that would be a requirement, can I still be here?

quote:

Discuss the latest or thread topic.

Ok, this I may have to get all hosterly about. Please just be careful you don't pick on any particular post or member. Please! We have to shut that stuff down.

quote:

does sarcasm count?

Carry on!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
quote:
Sexually abusing a teenager is a less serious crime if the girl is not a virgin, Italy's highest court said in a ruling.
that just shocks me. So I wonder if they would think the same thing if a woman is older and married.
quote:
but didja read about the guy who made his wife sign a contract?
quote:
Kat, that part is very easy! If you look at all the stuff on the top of the reply box, you will see quote the 5th box over. just click on it and the quote /quote will pop up automatically, just put what you want to quote between it. thing is, if you quote a lot like I am now, after you hit the quote box the text page jumps back up, so you have to scroll down.
quote:
I still kinda miss the ol' CW sidebar and maroon style, as I call it.
Don't even get me started. I miss old cw something fierce, especially go to last post and bookmarking posts, and auto subbing to threads one posts in.
that used to work for me till I downloaded firefox 1.5, and now it doesn't work. I might have to go back to...IE or something, because it really gets annoying.
4 posts showed up while I was typing out my other post!
i think it has to do with some Jew compiling and editing a Hebrew text which we know as the masoretic text. he did so about 1100 years or so (i forget) after the Septuagint...the Bible of the early church, apostles, etc.
i think the warning has something to do with the KJV-onlyists....maybe not.
You'd have to ask stellaluna - the masoretic texts are "ancient," so I think that is important - I can't stand people who are so quick to use verses from Leviticus to decry various things, but are completely unaware of the New Covenant angle.
"I wonder if they would think the same thing if a woman is older and married."
Well, if she was married, according to some, there's no such thing as rape; she was just (being coerced and forced) into fulfilling her marital duties. I"ve heard the argument used before, but with grown women, and non-incestual instances.
And that contract, whew - I was afraid to link to it, for fear of violating TOS. So often women have wondered, in light of some threads, "Where do these men come from..." but where do the women that agree to such things come from? I don't know. It was always my one complaint about Italy, the outright misogyny and chauvinism, but I'd never seen it to such an extent.
"Please just be careful you don't pick on any particular post or member. Please! We have to shut that stuff down."
Yes, please, no reverse snobbery!! Discuss how something is bringing you down, and why, but don't be mean.
Save that for the Theology folder.
Singles, marrieds, in-betweens, men and women, dresses-only and pants wearerers, pick your song, get up on the stage, and sing your heart out.
Or sit back at the bar with your pint or cuppa, and poke fun at whoever's on stage .
I could, I think, eat it every day. Well, sashimi and nigiri, more so than sushi.
Plus, I feel all fancy saying things like "nigiri."
And I like eating with chopsticks.
Though, I read that China's natural forest will be gone by 2011, because of all the chopsticks they export .
I want to say what I read said it was like, 11 billion chopsticks...
Sushi is actually just the rice.
Nigiri is the little squares of rice with topping. Sashimi is just the fish.
I bet most people in China do use reusable chopsticks, it's all the Chinese restaurants that use the wooden ones...
Interpol is the bomb. If I was going to sing karaoke in here, I would pick NYC because none of you could actually hear me butcher it. And that, my friends, is the beauty of a virtual karaoke bar.
I don't like the various forms of "sushi." They're too fishy and the the seaweed freaks me out.
Today I learned some not-very-nice things to say in Thai. Luckily, I've already forgotten them, so I don't have to worry about offending anyone or violating TOS.
Today I also pondered fat cats. I used to think mine were fat until I saw the 35-pounder from China. Animal abuse, that is.
I went bowling over the weekend and my left butt cheek (can I say that?) feels like it's going to fall off. At this point, I think I'd rather it did. Bowling is one of those things you'd either better do all the time or never, unless you want to feel like this. (And I barely broke 100, so it wasn't really worth it now, was it?)
I run across a lot of and and threads on CW, but the people keep me coming back for more. Honestly, I've met some of the coolest people EVER on this board and I don't intend to give them up. I REFUSE! SO THERE! (When I win the lottery, I'm going to spend part of my money on plane tickets to fly around and hug a few people. This may be akin to stalking. I apologize in advance and please don't call the cops. I've never been arrested and I think that would freak me out more than the sushi.)
***Along those lines, I always look forward to eutychus' new avatars. Oh that we could all be so creative!***
and the dents in my car
and the blisters on my lips
That's great, Marsha!
Mia, when I was thinking about a married woman, I was thinking stranger rape, not spousal rape. Would an older, married woman, the victim of nonspousal rape, be treated this way? after all, she could have done similar things in her other relationships that the rapist did.
I was thinking about this part of the article you quoted. was more developed and that therefore the damage to her was less than if she had been a virgin.
links to articles are ok as long as you're not selling something or there isn't anything in it that would violate tos, like a foul word or image. so link away :)
