Arley,

I can't duplicate the problem.

My best guess is you have a setting on your browser that is blocking you.

Maybe try switching to a different browser.

Fritz, Shalom.

OK, I have tried everything I can by actually zeroizing my security systems, and nothing helps. My PC works fine with every other Forum I work with, except this one. I just tried to start a Thread, and nothing happened. I went down to the bottom of a threas and clicked on 'PostReply,' noting happend. FastReply I can use, smily faces, etc, but very little else.

One more thought: This problem seems to have started shortly after one of my posts was yanked by the Moderator. Is it possible that something was clicked that yanked my ability to use this system?

If that not be the case, then I ask: Is it possible for me to set-up a new membership, and see if that allows me to use this Forum as I should be able to, and have been able to, up till now? Any guidance would be appreciated, as I am about frustrated enough to simply move on, even though I enjoy this crowd.

Ping.........ball in your court,...........again...............Thanks, and Shalom. Arley (yep, these stupid thing still work,,,,oh except when I click on the 'more smileys...' icon, then I get thrown to the top of the thread page, as if I had just clicked into the page).

No, nothing the moderator would have done could cause the problems you are experiencing.

Any reason why you refuse to try using a different browser?

Fritz, OK, I can now display my ignorance.

I am using Mozilla Firefox, primarily due to the spell factor. That is called a browser, right? I was able to do a mechanical hook-up (my words) with my Internet Explorer, which works OK, and without problem, as far as I checked it.

I am not the most PC literate person in the world, so when someone just say's 'do it' I am usually lost as to what on earth they are talking about. I can go back to using IE, but will then have to dump Firefox, as far as I can see, unless I desire to have an index of who what when and where browsers. I'm confused, are you?

I don't refuse to fly a spacecraft, I don't know how. Same with your request. I just find it ironic that something that has worked for months and months, and works everywhere else, cannot seem to work here.

Correct me if I am wrong, but when I am logged into your system, my PC is tantamount to being a dumb terminal is it not? The modules of capability are there, not here, and I only click into, and use your system, as I understand. If I suddenly cannot use your system, and can use other peoples systems exactly like yours, the indication is, to me at least, there is a problem with your system.

If I must, I guess I can do what you ask. You still have not told me if I can simply start another identity, if for no other reason than a test, and if it works I use that new identity, and set my present membership on the sideline. What say you?

In Messiah. Arley

Yes, you can start another account. Each member is allowed up to 2 accounts.

Nothing changed on our end. You are the only one reporting the problem. I can't duplicate the problem therefore the conclusion is the problem is with your computer settings or browser.

Since you say it works with IE then I can only conclude that there is a problem with your Firefox browser that is limiting your participation in the site.

If by "dumb terminal", you mean the same thing I meant by dumb terminal back in 1970, there are significant differences between a dumb terminal and a PC running a browser. A 1970s vintage dumb terminal merely relayed charcters from a remote computer to the screen, and relayed keystrokes to the remote computer. Some dumb terminals might have done this a block at a time instead of a character at a time.

(Yes, kiddies, there really were people using computers interactively way back in 1970!)

A PC running a browser is reading and interpreting a "markup language" such as HTML and carrying out complex formatting and composition commands, as well as copying text. A language like HTML can contain a scripting language like Javascript embedded in it. A scripting language is almost the same thing as a programming language. What all this means is that the website is transferring what might be thought of as software to your browser, and your browser is carrying it out. It's not quite as simple as this, but this will do for this discussion.

Different browsers respond differently to the same set of HTML commands and javascript statements. That is not the way things ought to be. But then, there are a great many things in this world that are not as they ought to be. As a Christian, I'm sure you know that.

It would be good if someone could take your browser, and the website, and figure out exactly where the incompatibility lies. That's beyond your knowledge and my knowledge, and possibly our moderator's knowledge. The difficulty is getting the right information in front of the right technical person who can troubleshoot the situation.

Given the resources the website has, and given the number of problems similar to yours that surface from time to time, it's no wonder if the people who run the website have to resort to triage to decide which problems to escalate.

I'm sorry if this is obscure, but I hope it helps.

Strider 33, Shalom, and thanks.

You are right, I studied programing in the early 80's. Nothing like today, and the dumb I was talking about, you described very well, including this old head of mine. Thanks again.

Oh yes, Fritz, I down-loaded Firefox total again, and left everything on default. No avail. I still cannot make it work any better. I know a 'wiz' close by that might be able to help me.

Thanks to all.

Fritz, Shalom.

It seems to be fixed. You were right, and I didn't even think to do this. I did a complete reload of my browser 'Firefox,' and I now have use of the system again. Sorry for my curtness with you. I was so sure that the problem had to be at your end, I went brain dead, on what I should have known to do: Lift the radiator cap, and drive a new engine and car under the cap, then lower cap into place, and drive away. Old world mechanics, but it works.

Thanks for your help, and patience.

In Messiah. Arley

Actually, by 1980, some dumb terminals, like the DEC VT100, interpreted certain commands, called "escape sequences" and performed some formatting functions in addition to copying text to the screen. And (sigh) different terminals sometimes reacted differently to the exact same sequence of text and embedded escape sequences. So the problem as I described it could have applied even to dumb terminals!

It just goes to show you what a mess we humans make!

( I might be beating a dead horse here. If I am, sorry.)

PS: Glad to see you fixed the problem.

I found a good workaround for the problem I've been mentioning.

The problem, to refresh your memory, is that sometimes the cell that contains the current forum is so large, and shifted so far to the right, that you can't read the extreme right end of lines of text.

And here's the workaround: If I log into crosswalk.com instead of christianity.com, the problem disappears!

That's right... it's something about the rendition of forums in christianity.com that cuases the forums to overhang the right edge of the screen. My browser was not at fault. Neither was the crosswalk website.

I guess this explains why the admins couldn't duplicate the problem locally. And I'm embarrassed to admit how slow I was to catch on to the difference between crosswalk.com and christianity.com.

Now I wonder how I would forward my bug report to the administrators over at christianity.com.

You just did. They're all the same admins for the different portals.

I am not getting any of the buttons. Everything is just a little box with what looks like a piece of paper. I have to hold the mouse over it to see what it is or know from memory. I have even rebooted. When I look at my subbed threads list they all say "Go to last read post. May homeschool chat" or whatever the thread name is.

My computer at work has been doing that too using Mozilla Firefox. I thought it just had something to do with my computer.

For what it is worth, folks, I had to do a new down load of my Firefox, to clear up my problem. Perhaps you should do the same. Mine works great again, and the update download of version 3.0x don't take very long to find out.

I think I have a bug. Hmm... how to explain? I seem to have one perpetual Next Unread Subscription. As I read through my subscriptions I get to the last one and it takes me to this message: This message has been deleted or moved, and therefore not available. It won't go away. No big deal. I just thought I should report it.

It probably means the post in question was deleted or something. Just go to the thread and then it should clear out.

Go to the my forums section, then at the bottom click on my subscriptions. from there go through the pages to the highlighted unread thread. When you see that, then go to that folder and click on the thread individually instead.

Try clicking on the previous page of the thread, then click on the new page instead.

I went to my forums/my subscriptions like Mike suggested. The only unread thread on my list was "The Lion's Den". So I went to PFY, clicked on The Lion's Den, but it didn't clear it up.

Something tells me maybe it's the thread that was corrupted some time ago. I don't know what happened, Lioness would have to fill in there.
