Not sure if there has been a thread on this already but as of June 30 2008 you will no longer be able to buy Windows XP.

Article here. (or google discontinue windows xp)

Vista is being forced upon us (I'm not a fan of Vista yet)

Although the official date has been set. M$ is not about to shoot themselves in the foot they will still be offering XP Home on ULPC's because of the success of the Asus eeepc. Here is a link to a petition to keep XP. http://weblog.infoworld.com/save-xp/

Microsoft has moved back the cut-off date for XP more than once already. If enough consumers and businesses demand XP, Microsoft will most likely keep selling it.

Nobody is forcing Vista on you. There is and will remain a choice -- Linux! Try it, it's great!

Or even better, a Macintosh.

If I could run OSX on my intel-based IBM compatible desktop machine, I'd do it, and never look back

They probably never will due to the huge number of hardware combinations and the likelihood of legacy stuff. I'd like to see them do it with a very limited scope of supported equipment, though. Frankly, the legacy things are what keeps MS from doing a better job. Backward compatibility beyond a certain point leads to many sub-optimal design decisions.

Even if you buy a MAC you are still using a proprietary system that only runs on its own hardware. It is also expensive. I prefer Linux as it is free and anything that I did using Windoze I can do in Linux only better with greater efficiency. I have a dual boot setup XP pro for a couple of games and PCLinuxOS 2007 for everything else.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I probably wouldn't consider using a linux system (to be honest, I don't really even know what it is). I guess I'll just have to live with the upgrade. I'll get used to it eventually.

My understanding is MS will(late spring, summer)quit publishing XP Home while Dell will still offer in on Dimension/Inspiration machines. I resume XP Pro and other higher OPs will be available for the 'foreseeable' future. However their crystal ball tend to be scratched and cloudy pretty fast.

Linux is an OS all you is download the iso image and burn the image to disk. Stick the disk in the cd/dvd drive and reboot your computer. This will load Linux from the cd and you can run it from the live cd without installing it to the hard drive. for anyone new to Linux I recommend PCLinuxOS. Here is the link http://www.pclinuxos.com/

lots of friendly folk there to answer any questions you may have.

Of course with virtualization it almost doesn't matter what the base OS is for those of us who want (or need) a lot.

Interesting that Asus just released (May 12) the EEE 900 series sub-notebook computers, with one option being a sparse version of XP home. Up to now, all the EEEs have had a pared down linux OS.

I love my Mac
Vista hoovers, XP is the best thing to come out of Redmond in years and they are killing it. You almost have to wonder (if you were into conspiracies) if Bill Gates didnt do that on purpose to piggyback his leaving the company. No matter though....
I love my Mac

You can. It's just not legal. Or rather, it's a grey area.
Apple's license says you should only install OSX on Apple hardware. However, it's possible to install OSX on regular PCs. Heck, I've seen someone install it on an AMD x2 machine. Whether that will hold up in court however is another matter. It's never been taken to court though that I know of.

I'm no lawyer, but it seems to me that Apple is within its rights to restrict usage of its operating system to its hardware. That seems like a reasonable contract/license term to me. Not even unethical. Just minorly annoying.

Are you talking about resellers or private citizens. I can see an argument for going after vendors, but private citizens should be allowed to do whatever they want with stuff they paid for.

Should be? Yes. But if you read closely the terms you have to agree to in order to install that software, you do not own it at all, you are only leasing it. They did that in order to keep people from decompiling it, reverse engineering it or tweaking it to do what you want it to do.

It also has the effect of giving the software company complete control over its usage; what platform it will or won't work on, they can turn it on or off at will, etc.

EULA's a must read for the end user of proprietary software. Basically takes away any rights you think you might have. That is why I like/use open source products. GPL forever.
