I do not know if this is the proper place for this subject or if it has been addressed before so moderators please handle accordingly, anyway, how do you feel about pastors, preachers, gospel artist, being political from the pulpit or in concert?

I believe preachers should preach about Jesus. Political leaders come, and they go, but the word of God stands forever, and has eternal consequences. What is more important, to talk about who will be the next President, or to preach about where one will spend eternity?

Speaking as a pastor, I think that like just about everything else, there are right and wrong ways to be political. If we teach the Bible properly, we won't need to endorse candidates, parties, or issues.

There are many social issues that are both political and part of the faith.

Death penalty, abortion, homosexual marriage, war, sex education, planned parenthood and doctors treating children without notifying the parents. etc.

There is nothing wrong with addressing these issues from the pulpit as part of teaching on a Godly lifestyle.

Thanks
RC

It depends on what you mean by "political". In a general sense the the effort to direct or influence others to accomplish objectives could be considered as political. This can apply to communism, the American revolution, homecoming queen, who will be selected as the next pastor, or what color choir robes to select.

The biggest danger to Christians is to get diverted from growing into the image of Christ to a path that serves the flesh. Whether big issues or small, the flesh elevates self and leads us away from Jesus. The book of Galatians was written to some Christians who has gotten off track this way.

Even well meaning pastors who wish to address topical issues can inadvertently lead people away from Christ by implying the correction of societal ills lies at the ballot box instead of with hearts surrendered to Jesus.

The course of the world is set by Satan (in so far as God allows him). When a pastor describes the world and its effects in a church, he wants to avoid the "tar baby" phenomena (of Uncle Remus fame) where he leads people to entanglement with the very thing he is trying to condemn.

Some pastors go so far as to chastise their church for failing to engage in worldly affairs and thus allow evil to prosper in the world. Such admonitions often lead others to greater worldly and fleshly entanglements that can greatly hinder any growth in the image of Christ.

Mushhead, how does one teach the Bible properly and not address some of the social issues of today.

Did not Christ and Paul and the rest of the road crew address issues ot their day??

Thanks
RC
