I bought my daughter a Gateway T-1628 Turion laptop for her graduation this past May. About a month ago the right speaker quit working. I called tech support and they had me reinstall the driver. That didn’t work, so they suggested I send it in for repair. Since the laptop is still under warranty, I would only have to pay for shipping to the Gateway Repair. Does anyone know of anything else I can check before I go to the expense of shipping the laptop?

That is all you can do for hardware issues on laptops.

Hello my Lady, If it is still under warranty I would send it in (as Miss Giggles suggested) as they may find that if it is a integrated sound issue and not the speaker itself, she will end up recieving a new motherboard. For future, if the item is not under warranty I would make sure you are grounded for Static Electricity and take apart the Laptop and make sure the connectors are seated properly. it could be as simple as that...sadly :D. Question: Did she/anyone drop the Laptop at anytime?

Check that the speakers work first. Plug them into something else, or touch a screwdriver tip (or something else metal) to the tip and ring of the speakers' plug. One should be the left channel, the other the right. You should hear noise when you do this. Also plug something you know works into the laptop, like another set of speakers, or headphones.

She hasn't dropped the laptop as far as I know. MWD, I did a test on the speakers using Windows Vista helps...and there was no sound coming out of the right speaker. The speakers are built in. I didn't know I could plug in a set of speaker? I didn't think of this. Will have to try this later.
